1998-99 upper deck short prints question!!!

I am looking at buying some sets I had lost to a flood several years ago and everything was going good until I started looking for 1998-99 and 1999-00 upper deck sets, I found a guy that has a set but wants quite a bit for it because of the short prints. A friend originally gave me most of the set and I can't remember having any trouble completing it back in the day, so my question is what cards are short prints? and how rare are they?

Beckett does NOT list ANY SPs in 1998-99 set. MOST of the #s between 136 and 168 are listed as SP in the 1999-00 set -- they value from .75 to $5 for the Gretzky -- don't have any idea how hard to find

Neither set had any major rookie,SPs and most SP's aren't RC's and aren't super hard to find. If anyone is charging you anything more than what seems reasonable, I'd move on.

Looks like you made a decent deal. Congrats! While I'm a little late to the party, I would say this:

    1998-99, I don't recall there being SPs.

When I was building the set (about 7 years ago) for 1999-00, I found the SPs harder to track down than YGs from the early 2000s. I don't think they were anymore SP'd, but I suspect that because they were named something else (i.e. NOT Young Guns) then people were less likely to list them.

1998-99 Had the Calder Candidates and Program of Excellence SP's. No big names in either that I can recall. 1999-00 had the Star Power SP's as well as Young Guns in S1, and those funky blue SP's with decent names (Luongo, Sedin's) in S2.

Thanks again guys. I am really looking forward to getting these cards. I had so much fun tracking down and completing my lost sets that I have decided to do every Upper Deck (series 1 & 2) set since they started only 4 more years to go.

Anyone notice how the older Young Guns have skyrocketed in value over the past year?.. It's pretty ridiculous - even the junk wax YG's are insane... I mean Koivu, Alfredsson, Selanne all sell on eBay for well over $15 bucks when not long ago you could buy them for a buck all day... And I don't even think Selanne's YG is even his rookie considering he had a 91-92 UD Canada Cup card that was and has been accepted as his "true rookie" and Koivu's YG is a Collectors Choice YG, so it's not even the standard Upper Deck set..... Let's just say when I saw what they were selling for I was like "ok, I have an 800 count box full of them", lol...

Look, only someone new to the hobby would drop $15+ bucks on a card that wasn't worth much at all less than a year ago.. IMO, think the "noobs" or those just getting into the hobby for the first time are the ones driving up the value of these otherwise insignificant cards.

I think you're right. I've been selling off some Basketball cards I couldn't move for more than a few bucks a years ago for some crazy premiums. Everyone is looking for "an investment". It reminds me of how the hobby exploded in the 90s. Everyone was getting in thinking they had a collectable that would hold its value or increase over time. The print runs were just too large for that to be true. I guess it's getting harder to find gem mint copies of these cards 30 or so years after their release but there are still a ton of unopened boxes around.
