Players had to debut before February 12th to make cut off for this year's releases. Do you think they would have been able to get Knight & Caufield into major releases like SP Authentic, Ultimate, Premier and The Cup with almost no lead time? They're going to be featured content for a full slate of 2021-22 releases.

I get the saving them. Was unaware of cutoff dates, but aren't there some in extended that have never played a game?

Rather than the timing of the player's debut, the prerequisite for entry into the set should be Upper Deck having an action photo of these players available.
It is rough seeing so many headshot young guns in this extended set.

There are, which is weird...to an extent. The rule for goalies has always been they just have to dress for the game (even as the backup) so that's why you get Joel Hofer in there (he's one that I think should have been held over....if he doesn't get into SPA, etc. I will be pretty disappointed) but I think the whole pandemic situation has allowed for some relaxation of the rules. Guys like Cam Hillis and Haydn Verbeek (the latter of whom was traded at the deadline for Jon Merrill) haven't played a game and as best as I can recall weren't even called up by the Habs at any point this season. It's odd, for sure, and means that they're basically filler with little value at this point.
