05 06 UD Rookie Showcase Ovechkin print run - need help

I have a few of the 2005-06 UD Rookie Showcase cards, these were some type of promo by Upper Deck, I don't recall all the details but you would enter online and UD mailed out cards to you. I have these 2 Ovechkins which are still in the original taped top loaders.

I have found information on the "gold" card which has a print run of 1,000 copies. But I have the "pewter" version as well, can't find anything about this series. I do recall something about a print run of 600 copies, but can't find anything to confirm that. Neither of these were Beckett promo cards, saw something about those, but these were both direct from UD.

So if anyone has any information on these promo cards, and what the print runs are. Thank you!

05 06 UD Rookie Showcase Ovechkin print run - need help

    So back in the daaaaayyyyyy…..

UD had the “gold” rookie showcase cards available on the old upper deck ePack website. I forget how you ‘won/redeemed’ them though. They were not inserted into packs as redemptions. There are 1000 of each. The way to tell the gold ones is in how rich and deep the gold printed ink is. Think of it as copper. Gold ink, and not foil, should be a deep orangey brown.

Beckett decided that they wanted to run a version of these cards in their magazines in 2005/06. The randomly inserted cards were gummy-glued on a white insert tab in Beckett magazines. They have a print run of 21,000 - every hockey Beckett had one and this ran for a few months. These ones have weaker ink, lighter colored ink (more grey orange), and usually have chipping or creasing. Think of the color of light tanned leather or canvas.

As for value, the online run ones usually go for double the Beckett ones, but that said, not a lot of people care about the distinction (or any player in the set other than Crosby or Ovechkin).

Having them in their “from Upper Deck” top loaders and penny sleeves does nothing to the value of the cards as they are the same materials readily available at most hobby shops. Their value is in protection only. The Beckett versions did not come in top loaders.

Your Ovechkin on the right is the online version, and looks to be in what I remember UD sent these to you in. The one on the left is the Beckett promo version, and has ben put in a top loader after the fact.

No other versions of this card exist (just the 2)

Good information, thank you. I forgot it was an ePack promo, I received about 10 cards in total.

I understand the UD toploader thing adds no value, I was only making reference that all my Rookie Showcase cards are in taped toploaders, I didn't pull any from any Beckett issues. They all came direct from UD. Possible some of the Pewter Beckett promo cards were sent out from the ePack program? I don't where I got the idea there was a 600 print run on the pewter cards. I do remember thinking when I first got these that maybe it was a print error, or sometimes print runs vary slightly in color.

I'll go with the gold/copper as the original true redeemed card. The other, I'll assume is a promo card mailed out.

    Thank you for your help.

Ah I remember these. I remember people trying to figure out the difference between the two. Good times. Sweet cards!
