Habs GM Search - Kent Hughes is the new GM (Updated)

While the on-ice product continues to be a challenge to watch, things had been pretty quiet the past couple weeks in terms of what the Canadiens would be doing to find the GM to succeed Marc Bergevin. New director of hockey ops Jeff Gorton has been busy though and it sounds like interviews may be happening as early as Wednesday.

    Per Lebrun:

    Some names being considered:
    Roberto Luongo
    Mathieu Darche
    Daniel Briere

    Other names suggested here:

    Patrick Roy
    Marc Denis
    Stephane Quintal
    Daniele Sauvageau
    Emilie Castonguay

I expect it’ll take a couple weeks or so once the process starts, but there’s some interesting potential here.

    Thoughts, fellow Habs fans?

I think Matt Darche is the best choice, but Luongo would be a ton of fun.

I wonder how Patrick Roy would be as a GM?

I bet Mario Lemieux could build a great team as a GM but he is tied to the Penguins for life I suppose.
Hoping Luongo just for the entertainment factor. Don't think he is bilingual though?

    Luongo is fluently bilingual.

Roy would be interesting. He was interviewed the other day.

Sounds like the first round is complete and we should know who will be the new GM in the next two weeks.

I had heard Manon Rhemume's name tossed around a while ago.... I guess that didn't go anywhere?

The local sports radio station has Ren Lavoie on frequently enough. I caught their chat with him yesterday. He figures there's no way they hire Roy as GM. Would be a bad move. The moment anything looks bad with the team, there will be immediate calls to make him the coach. "Patrick, why don't you step behind the bench?"

He was advocating for the Habs to hire Roy for something other than GM. Either just hire him as the head coach and get it over with, or hire him in some other capacity, so he's the "head coach in waiting".

I can't help but wonder if Luongo's Twitter musings over what was going in the next luxury suite over the other day might impact his chances. LOL He would bring some levity to the role.

They got their man. Kent Hughes is the 18th GM in Habs history.

Never heard of him until today - so I can't say I have an opinion one way or another.

    Good luck to him.

He is an agent and one of his clients is soon to be free agent Patrice Bergeron.
    Can't even imagine...
