What happened?
On January 23, 2022, I agreed to move my Sidney Crosby Ultimate RPA to Ryan Drobot (@WarchiefCards )in a deal valued ~ $11k CAD.I shipped it the next day (Jan 24, 2022) FedEx Express Priority Mail, pre-paying in advance and dropping it off at the Staples depot as I've done countless times. The package was supposed to arrive on Jan 26, 2022.
It didn't. A few days go by, still nothing. Ryan and I decided to wait out the weekend and see what the following week would bring. On Monday, January 31, 5 days after it was supposed to arrive, I check the tracking and to my surprise, there was still no movement. Even as I check today, there is no movement (see photo with highlight).
I decided to call customer support on January 31 and that's when I get a nightmarish update - the package was assessed to be "missing" contents and that is why it was not delivered. I was advised to file a claim for missing contents/packages.
Yesterday, February 3, 2022, I finally got to speak to the agent on the case and all signs point to theft. When the item was checked into their hub in Memphis, it was "missing contents". Part of the protocol is to discard the packages missing contents (conspicuously convenient because I'll likely never know how it was tampered with… contents don’t just magically go missing from a package…).
There is still an ongoing investigation with FedEx, but they will likely turn up with nothing and I will only be entitled to an insurance value of $100. I set it to this amount b/c the risk of having something lost is low (1-2%), and I was working with information that the max anyone can claim from FedEx for sports cards and collectibles is $1K. As it turns out, FedEx, Purolator and Canada Post offer insurance for sports cards that you can pay for, however when it comes to claiming the amount if/when the package goes missing they will only honour within the limits they have established (roughly speaking, $500-$1,000). I've learned that USPS is an option when shipping CA-USA as they will honour the insurance on sports cards, but at the expense of a high price (depending on insurance amount), stringent review process, slow delivery and duties for the buyer to pay. 3rd party insurance is another option, though I am not yet familiar with it. Moving forward, I will be seriously considering 3rd party insurance & in-person delivery on all deals of similar value and would implore the community to educate themselves on better alternatives.
Update (Feb 6, 2022): FedEx has gone against what they originally claimed - so the package was actually not discarded. It was X-ray scanned and assessed to not have any contents inside, but with no damage to the package (are they seriously trying to blame me?!). I have demanded that they send the package to me for inspection, will update this thread as I learn more.

Wow!!! Be hard for me to put an 11k card in the mail especially how things are with the mail system these days. I purchased a low end football auto in November. I actually forgot about it. I received it from USPS a few days ago and it was beat to heck, water damaged, etc.. luckily it was a $10 value. I’m curious how yours turns out. Keep us updated.
