Help on a card value: Malkin Cup Rookie Platinum /25
Friend of mine has some cards he just touched for the first time in 15 years. There's some other nice ones - but the one real standout card is a Malkin Cup RC from 2006-07. It's the non-auto / non-patch parallel /25.
This isn't the kind of card that I know the market well on, so I'm soliciting opinions. What do you think this is worth? I've told him I suspect "thousands" but I really don't know.... and $2k is much different from $8k (though I expect somewhere in the middle).

That is the correct the card, yes. $300 is the BV? That seems very low, considering how the market went.
I will attempt to get a picture. I have one on my phone - but it's crummy (he probably doesn't have a scanner to take a nice pic with).

There is a Cup RPA/99 on eBay asking 9k CDN, very nice patch, as a reference. (That actually seems like a great deal relative to what some popular psa10 YG's command.)
Well there is an Ovechkin version of the 25 rc parallel with an ask of 88,000, and a Getzlaf with an ask of 575.00, so....

$300 BV seems a little low. Thousands seems way too high. I would suspect it could sell for $500-$600 USD. I honestly don't see how a non-patch/non-auto parallel of a rookie card would sell for much higher than that. But that's just me.

It's really weird to me. OPC Platinum rookie parallels sell for a fortune, like a seismic gold /50, but a high end product like The Cup, and a rc parallel # to /25 is just a "non auto patch" parallel.

Thanks for the comments guys. When he told me what he had, immediately I thought "several thousands, at least". The "non auto / patch" parallels from the first two years of the cup seem to have really done a number on their values though. Strikes me as odd.
There's a few YG Exclusives listed on eBay between $2500 and $3500 CND. They're slabbed (9s, mostly). I'd have thought his card would be worth at least what those are - but maybe not?

I have a copy of his UD Exclusives YG card, pulled it myself in 2007. Very nice card, value has been creeping up and I have it valued between $750-$1,000, raw not graded. Anything YG (exclusives, canvas, HG) seem to command more $$.
I would expect The Cup /25 card would fetch at least that amount, but being /25 sales history will be almost non-existent. I would guess $500-$1,000 but like you I would think it should be a lot more.

Malkins value hasnt really shot up like the other stars. Sure his YG / FW / Cup will, the more obscure stuff doesnt do as well.
While the "BV" at 300 is laughable, I dont think this card reaches much past the $1000CAD mark. You might find that one guy that really wants / needs the card, but there arnt too many Malkin only guys anymore.
Last YG Exclusives BGS 9 did $2K CAD. We all know "BGS 9" is basically garbage days for modern for some reason.
OPC Platinum RC parallels are confusing if you dont follow any other sports. Especially the Golds /50 as they often out sell lower numbered parallels. The American sports communities ( Baseball / Football / Basketball ) all have the hots for anything that says "Gold". Platinum Golds are all we have in the hobby if any of them want to branch out and still have a somewhat familiar sense / feeling to what they already know.
YG parallels speak for themselves within the Hockey community.
UD has not done Cup RC parallels any favors by discontinuation of the Platinum /25 and Cup Gold RC Au Patch /jersey number.
For sure it seems like an underappreciated card .... if the masses dont want it, and its not an easily manipulated market, there will be little buzz and little demand for the card

I think Malkin is undervalued for a few reasons.
Over shadowed by Crosby being a big one.
The hobby often cares more about potential vs what has already been accomplished. 3 Cups in Malkin's case. Still puts up good numbers when healthy.
Malkin looks like a giant dork. lol He hasn't been marketed that well.
I do think his cards have room for growth in the future. Especially since he doesn't have near as many rc cards as current players. He is a sure fire hall of famer.
Also collectors may have been like me and assumed any rookie year Cup cards would be way too expensive to collect. I mean if you had to chose what to spend a $1000 on, a PSA10 YG of a new potential good player, which will turn out to be a 65 pt player, or a Cup rookie parallel to only 25 of a 3 time SC winner and Hall of Fame player?
The herd will probably still go for the mass produced PSA10 YG though.
