Jason Spezza Announces Retirement
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...-front-office/
Was really hoping he would reach 1000 points (5 short) and win a cup before he retired. A great player, not an HHOF player, but someone I enjoyed watching over the years, especially when he centred the Pizza Line.
Congrats to Jason Spezza on his retirement.

Spezza's retirement is now the final guy of all my main PC guys from 2001-02 and 2002-03 of Datsyuk, Kovalchuk, Zetterberg, Rick Nash and Spezza himself. End of an era for me. He had a great career.
If anyone has his 2001-02 UD Young Guns, please let me know =)
Here's my top 9 from my Spezza collection =)

Spezza has had a solid career. I agree that he is probably not going to the Hall, but he had a couple of great seasons while in Ottawa and was a consistent playoff performer when his teams did go deep.

In a way, it makes me think to Brodeur when he retired; the guy was only 9 wins away from the 700 mark... I mean, obviously it's not a cash matter, but I'm always hoping that in those situations the players will do an exception and play a little longer just to reach those milestone marks. Come on, Spezza is just 5 points away from reaching one thousand. Anyway, it is what it is. His decision, and I respect it. Of course, Congrats to him on his retirement. He was a real good player, for sure!Last edited by sleepn0t; 05-30-2022 at 02:05 AM.

I was surprised he packed it in. I'll speculate - my guess is that the Leafs didn't want to bring him back, and he didn't want to move anywhere else.
Great player, yes. As others have said, not going to the HOF - but that's okay. Most players don't. Had a heck of a good career, and was always entertaining to watch.

I don't have a huge collection of him, things like its Pacific Exclusive and Topps Total rookies. I once had its 02-03 YG, but I traded it for a sweet piece for my Carbonneau collection. 02-03 was the first year of cards I was active online and following the hobby closely. Many memories of the hype around people pulling its key rookies. He had a great career, he can be proud of him.
