Former Boston Red Sox left-hander Bill Lee was said to be all right after collapsing on a bullpen mound and suffering a 'cardiac episode' during an exhibition game on Friday in Savannah, Ga.

Lee, 75, got up and was assisted as he walked out of the stadium, according to Savannah's WJCL News.

Lee quickly received medical attention from firefighters, police officers and a paramedic, the Savannah Morning News said, before being taken to a local hospital.

'I would say without immediate intervention, that person would not be alive right now,' Town of Thunderbolt Administrator Bob Millie, also a firefighter who was in the right-field stands, said.

'He had a cardiac episode that stopped his breathing. That only ends one way normally, but their direct involvement saved his life.'

The owner of the team Lee was playing for, the Savannah Bananas, announced to the crowd, according to CBS Boston, 'He is back, he is OK, he is talking and he is feeling strong. Bill is gonna be all right.'

Millie said Lee was given CPR and an AED (automated external defibrillator) was used.

The Bananas' game against the Party Animals was paused briefly as Lee was tended to, then resumed.

Lee starred for the Red Sox from 1969-78, and the club inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2008. He won 17 games in 1973 (his only All-Star season), 1974 and 1975, helping Boston reach the World Series in 1975.

Nicknamed 'The Spaceman' for his colorful antics on the mound, Lee was a fan favorite in a career that concluded with four seasons with the Montreal Expos (1979-82).
