22-23 Upper Deck MVP #1 Draft Pick Question
So I went to the LCS today to purchase some supplies and found out MVP was out. So I purchased a box. I managed to land the 22-23 MVP 2022 #1 Draft Pick DP-1 (1:1,250 packs).
So my question is... who is this card going to be? How does this work?
No recent sales. Yet someone sold an Atlantic Division Draft Pick for $99.99 and it says Juraj Slavkovsky in the listing.
I checked out some info on 21-22 #1 Draft Pick and see listings as Owen Power and listings as Alexis Lafreniere. Has Upper Deck sent as the redemptions for 21-22 cards yet?
Just looking for some info. I threw it up on eBay but I wouldn't want to list it as a Juraj Slavkovsky card if it is not.Master List: Hidden Content

I believe the division cards.... you'll get a "set". One rookie from each team. The #1 draft pick card is just that. It's a single card (likely of the #1 pick - though it's not for sure).
If Slavkovsky makes the team (i.e. plays at least one game this year, and is therefor eligible for cards) I would imagine he's a lock to be the Montreal player in the Atlantic redemption set. Since he was the #1 overall pick he'll probably the player for that card as well - but until they announce it, I don't believe it's guaranteed to be anything other than a "top" rookie.
If memory serves me correctly, Owen Power was NOT the MVP redemption, despite being the #1 overall pick (because he wasn't eligible for cards).

I'm still waiting for my 2021-22 MVP #1 draft pick redemption card from Upper Deck. I checked the status of it yesterday. It does say it is in stock now and does identify the card as being Owen Power.

Hmm... interesting. It's kinda just how I thought it was. However I was siding with 30RanfordFan about Owen Power not being eligible for rookie cards in that year but apparently the Upper Deck website lists it as Owen Power?
COMC has some, they're all scratched and sent to Upper Deck. They do not identify the player.
Time will tell I suppose.

I don't think the #1 draft pick card is considered to be a true rookie card. So I think that's how they can have this card as part of a 2021-22 release and still have his rookie cards in 2022-23 products. Mind you, Michael Bunting has his Young Gun rookie in 2020-21 and his Canvas Young Gun in 2021-22, so who knows what the criteria is anymore for a rookie card?

This is correct. The MVP #1 Draft Pick (as well as the Tim Hortons #1 Draft Pick) cards are always listed as XRC. They have always featured the #1 overall selection from that draft class, but due to the NHLPA rules, they cannot produce/release the card until such time as the player has made their NHL debut. So it might have a wonky timeline depending on the player. But if you look here: https://www.comc.com/Cards,sc,i100,=mvp+draft+pick the list always corresponds to the #1 selection.
Congrats on the big hit!

Yeah, so this strikes me as odd. The "designation" of the card (XRC, vs RC) isn't really all that meaningful when it comes to the release (it's meaningful when it comes to collectability - but that's a different topic).
As I understand the terms of their license, Upper Dec can not make cards of Owen Power, in an NHL licensed set, until he plays an NHL game. Owen Power was not eligible to go into 2021-22 products - since his NHL debut happened so late in the season.
However, since UD is so behind on their releases - they can include him as a 2021-22 redemption anyway? I suppose it's not without precedent. Yakupov & Huberdeau had XRCs from the 2012-13 season (redemptions in Artifacts, Series 1, Limited, maybe another?) where the cards were actually produced & released in the 2013-14 season.

I suspect they can proceed with Power now. They did a GDM on epack when he made his debut (mine arrived in the mail yesterday) -- I don't think that will impact him getting the full slate of RC's in 2022-23.

Yeah, hadn't thought about the GDM cards either. I suspect because they're outside of a regular set - and they can play around with the actual print dates... they've got a little more freedom to make whatever they want, whenever they want.
