Kane and/or Toews ?

It's definitely time to move on. I think that as teams get closer to the playoffs, we'll see more intense trade discussions. I could see both Kane and Toews going to a team that is built to win now. My predictions ...
Kane - Oilers or Rangers (dark horse - Toronto)
Toews - Dallas or Colorado (dark horse - Islanders)
There's been tons of speculation that Kane is going to ride shotgun for McDavid. Kane provides tons of offensive potential and playoff experience. The Rangers could also be a potential landing spot for Kane. They have tons of young talent that they could move for Kane right now to take a run at the Cup. I could see Toronto making a run for Kane but they would have to work some payroll magic and likely give away a boatload of picks and prospects (both to free up cap space and then acquire Kane). Unlikely to happen but Dubas and Co. are quickly running out of chances.
Dallas is a very gritty team that would be a great match for Toews type of play. They have lots of great wingers but could definitely use help down the middle. I could also see Colorado making a run for Toews as well. Losing Kadri has impacted them more than they are willing to acknowledge and I could see Toews moving here closer to the trade deadline. I could also see the Isles making a push for Toews as well. They have a very defensive minded team that if healthy, could go deep in this year's playoffs. I would not be shocked to see Toews jump onto the isle, but I wouldn't expect it either.

Chicago is clearly in rebuild/tank mode, and I can't envision either of these two wanting to spend their twilight years at the bottom of the standings. Both still have a lot to offer a contending team.
Both are UFA's after this season, on $10.5M contracts with a full NMC. So they would have to waive and they would get to pick their destination. That makes it all the more difficult given that nearly every team is right up against the cap. There would have to be some gymnastic involved, salary retention, Chicago would have to take on a bad contract, etc.
Based on what I said before about the Hawks and where the organization is at...unless they win the lottery and get Bedard, I'd be shocked if either/both Toews/Kane are in Chicago next season.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Kane has already said that he will not go to Toronto. I can't see him going to the Oilers, they need more then another scorer. All the hockey insiders keep saying that he will end up with the Rangers, but then again, he's been linked to every team in the playoff hunt.
Toews, if traded could go to any team that needs a center that wins faceoffs and can play both ends of the ice. The biggest thing Toews brings is leadership
I honestly don't think Hawks GM Kyle Davidson will take any bad contracts back or retain any salary. Part of his rebuild plan is to go young with Prospects and draft picks. What makes the whole situation hard as you mentioned is that they (Toews and Kane) ultimately hold their future in their own hands.
That being said, Kane has said many a time that he would like to hold all the Hawks scoring records before he retires. Will he ask for a trade then resign back with the Hawks in the off season or will he just stay and ride out the rebuild.
I can't see Toews going to another team and not being the captain of that team. I think he stays no matter what.
I personally hope they both stay and retire as Hawks

If they get traded (and that's still an if) - Salary retention / taking back a bad contract makes too much sense. This is the last year of their deals, and the Hawks don't need the cap space. They'll get a better return it they can send them somewhere "on the cheap". Bad contracts? If they run beyond next year, I would tend to agree with you. Probably no desire to take back a big money deal unless it's for a player that they want.
I'll use Kane to the Oilers as an example (I don't buy it either.... but the rumors are there, and it's an easy one for me to use). No way the Oilers can take on Kane at 10.5 million, but if the Hawks retain half, they might be able to make 5.25 million work. If you get a third team involved (AZ?) the Oilers could get him at a 2.615 million cap hit (CHI retains half, trades to AZ... AZ retains half-of-half, trades to Edmonton). That's easy to fit in. The Oilers would still have to move out some salary, so likely Jesse Puljarvi has to go to the Hawks (he makes 3 million), on top of whatever picks & prospects the Hawks would want (plus whatever Edmonton would have to pay AZ to eat some of the cap hit too).
As you mentioned though, there's a fair bit of talk that Kane does value Hawks team records. He's 260 points back of Makita, and if he resigns for another 3 or 4 years - he'll have a great shot at breaking it. 167 goals to tie Bobby Hull might be tough to do, but the points are within reach if he doesn't go anywhere else.
A 1st round pick,. a top prospect, a young NHL roster player, and something else (mid round pick, B-level prospect) plus a body to make salaries work is what I'd be asking for on Kane. Maybe less quantity if the quality is really high. It would really help the rebuild if they got it (same for Towes, but I don't think they'll get as much for him).

As a Hawks fan I agree. The Hawks are rebuilding and Kane could bring back some significant young assets and picks - which would obviously expedite the process. Kane wants to stay in Chicago because he's planted serious roots here - he considers Chicago his home - but at the same time he's a UFA (as well as Toews) so Kane can always resign and I'm confident the Hawks brass and management will take him back with open arms. Kane wants to be part of this rebuild and I hope he is and I'm sure he knows his market value and how much a trade could help the team.. I mean IMO, Kane still has at least 6-8 years left in the tank - I could see him playing well into his 40's (42-43?) and I wouldn't doubt the Hawks have had talks with Kane to bring him back summer ...I mean it's no secret that Kane loves Chicago and the Blackhawks and really wants to retire a Blackhawk.... So yea, I would expect to see Kane resign with the Hawks July 1st... Of course it would be different if Kane never won a cup and now has an opportunity as a UFA to sign with a contender - but Kane has already been there and done that three times, lol... So yea, I could see Kane signing a 3-4 year deal at 6.5 per
Now Toews on the other hand - yea I'm not so sure about Toews tho, if he's traded he probably won't be back. I mean I'm sure the Hawks would take him back, but I don't know if Toews is willing to come back, but you never know? It will be interesting to see what he signs for this summer..
Look, if the Hawks end up with the first overall pick (Connor Bedard obviously) and Kane resigns then one or two miserable seasons would be well worth it.... As a Hawks fan It would be awesome to have a generational talent like Bedard - and that's exactly what I'm hoping for... So yea, I'm rooting against the Hawks this season, lol - but it's for their own good.

Kane is not having a good year. Can't see the blackhawks offering much of a contract.

Obviously - but he doesn't have a good team either... He doesn't have Sharp or Panarin anymore - he has nothing... The skill is still there tho... I mean what is Kane supposed to do with borderline 2nd line players that cant finish???
And look, every GM knows if they add Kane and his playmaking ability and his offensive creativity and certainty -- it will boost their offense tremendously... Not only that but Kane isn't too shabby defensively either...
But I'm 95% certain after he's traded he will be back...... And who wouldn't want him back?? the dude is a vet - he's won 3 Cups so obviously he has plenty to teach the kids in this rebuild.. He can guide them and teach them how to be winners because he went though that himself.... Keep in mind the Hawks were terrible when he was drafted - so he knows something about that - he knows all about rebuilds and now it's his time to be the mentor - like Denis Savard was his mentor .....
Look, Kane will be traded for some significant assets, and this summer he will return to the Hawks .... I mean, Kane doesn't even want to leave - he lives here in the Chicagoland area - this is his home.... I don't know what his next contract is going to look like but it's going to be with the Hawks - I'm thinking 3-4 years at 6.5 per - perhaps front-loaded??...
I think Kane will play until he's my age, lol - 42-43 and then hang them up - so the kid has plenty of juice left in his game - 6, er perhaps even 8 years which would give him the opportunity to be part of a rebuild, and maybe win another Cup a few years down the road - what a story that would be, eh? lol... 42 year old Patrick Kane with his balding mullet lifting the Cup for the 4th time?? haha.. That would be awesome...Last edited by Savard18; 01-13-2023 at 03:20 PM.

No way!!! He's hurt!! big risk for any team now trading a boat load for him and not sure if he'll be able to go for the cup run..With this "lower body clean up" injury all this will wait another year..
Toews is washed up..Still good in at the dot so put him out and win the draw then to the bench.. good asset in the locker room and bench for the rah,rah leader but the toughness is gone last year when he sat out...Concussions!!! At best 3rd line faceoff cheerleader.
If hawks do trade one or both I don't think they will get diddly squat for either..
Kanes up in the pressbox for the last couple games hoping all-star break gives him another week but no way is he able to go another cup run this year.
Godawg i shoulda been his agent!!! Ok hawks you wanna rebuild? ok thats fine well my boy is hurt now so he might throw in the towel for this year and get "cleaned up" and then you the hawks and chicago can watch him walk as free agent this summer and get nothing and like it!!!! LOL..Last edited by 2card; 01-15-2023 at 10:26 PM.
