Picked up some Vintage baseball cards!

Well, I actually bought them on eBay and I'm waiting for them to come in.

I generally PC Nolan Ryan, Texas Rangers, knuckleballers (for some reason), and the Panini Prizm "The Old Ball Game" series. And some other "miscellaneous" cards that I just happen to like.

Anyway, as part of my knuckleballer collection, I recently got the following:

    1949 Bowman #115, Dutch Leonard
    1952 Topps #110, Dutch Leonard
    1957 Topps #203, Hoyt Wilhelm
    1969 Topps #123, Wilbur Wood

I was going to buy a vintage Eddie Cicotte, but they were out of my current "comfortable spending that on a card" price range, so I bought a newer one that has him on it.

So my knuckleball part of my PC is almost complete. I need four or five more to have it. Now, I don't have ALL the knuckleballers that have ever been in MLB, I just picked select ones. Mainly names I've heard.

I'm seriously considering sending them to SGC for grading when I get them.

Oh, I picked up that 1952 on eBay. I'm at the point where, I think, I'm going to get more out of buying singles rather than the boxes at Walmart or a LCS. Just buy a box every now and then, if that, but stick to singles. Oh, don't get me wrong; I'd love to hit a high end parallel or high end autograph, but I feel like people like me usually don't "hit" on those things.

I'd rather just have a few things in my PC that I'd really enjoy, then spending tons of money on value boxes and hoping I hit something. I think I'd rather spend the money trying to get some TTM autos, and getting some more of my Nolan Ryan cards autographed, and getting some of my PC graded/slabbed, rather than "chase" the big hit.

Of course, that could change, but right now that's where I am.

Oh, I picked up that 1952 on eBay.

Oh yeah I know that I just meant that you don't see many vintage postings on here. Seems like everyone just likes the newer shiny stuff. There was a lot more people buying and trading vintage years ago it seems.

    @pwaldo

Yeah, that's true. I'm going to have to look into a little more vintage myself. The problem I have is I'm sometimes uncomfortable spending that kind of money on a card. Of course, grading the cards adds to the cost, so if I grade a $20 card, it's "really" a cost of $35, for instance, because of the grading.

I think "singles" are going to be the way to go for me. I mean, I'd LOVE to have some auto cards of some current players, but I don't want to spend money on box after box of cards chasing "rare" parallels and autographs. The "fun" lasts about as long as it takes me to open and go through the packs. I may still buy one occasionally retail, though. But truthfully, I did just purchase a set of the "high number" T206 that Topps just released, so I'll see what's in there when I get it.

So I think aside from the "knuckleballers" I have and my Nolan Ryans (which I'd like to get more of), and my Texas Rangers and Panini Prizm "the Old Ball Game" series, I'm just gonna have to make a list, and maybe just buy the players I want.

Is there a better way to protect cards other than grading and a one-touch? I've thought about "slabbing" them myself. I could make my own labels, and I can buy empty slabs on Amazon and just super glue them together (since I don't own my own sonic welder).
