Nick Saban is retiring after 17 years as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The 72-year-old won six national titles after taking over back in 2007. But Alabama was beaten in the Rose Bowl by Michigan earlier this month and now, as first reported by ESPN , Saban has decided to retire in absolutely seismic move.

Saban is the highest-paid college football coach ever and had signed a new deal with Alabama in 2022 worth $93.6 million over eight seasons.

Oregon’s Dan Lanning is expected to be Alabama's top target to replace Saban, according to the Action Network.

University of Alabama director of athletics Greg Byrne confirmed the news on Wednesday evening with a statement paying tribute to 'one of the greatest coaches of all time, in any sport.'
