I believe that the future of the hobby is bright. I study was done showing that more younger kids are joining the fun. And there is MORE MONEY THAN EVER being spent on cards in the form of scarce rookie autos and high grade vintage- namely exquisite and psa8 and up old stuff.

I think that the next ten years will give us a better idea of the future of our hobby, but I think it looks great.

The degradation of the hobby is Upper Deck's fault. Not only are they killing cards, but they're killing memorabilia by buying it all up and dissecting it. I refuse to spend a penny on their Exquisite crap, and in protest I'm putting all my money into old-school Topps.

I agree with this.. There's no way to beat the value you get out of your dollar on ebay when it comes to cards. However, this alone will NOT sustain people new to the hobby, since pack busting is what draws most people in in the first place.

I agree that from a business standpoint they HAD to use the memorabilia.. and that to beat out the competition they would've had to provide more of them than the other brands.. But when this translates into bigger costs/pack, that gets ugly :(

..and maybe it's just around my area, but my dealer says in the last 10 years the number of kids that collect cards have dwindled to basically nothing. I'm probably one of MAYBE 5 people under the age of 30 that are "regulars," from my estimation.. and this is for all sports, not just basketball.

Yeah, at my local card shop, they mainly cater to the Yu-gi-oh/pokemon/magic crowd now because sports cards just aren't profitable for them...
