    1964 Topps Set: Estimated Grades

I've been debating having my 1964 Topps Baseball set graded. Based on your opinions, what do you all think these would grade out at before I decide on whether I want to do this or not? 6, 7, maybe 8???? Or am I too high.

Ok. Let's start at the beginning. Those are some beautiful cards that anyone here would be proud to own! Second thing, I ALWAYS recommend grading MANTLE, MAYS and AARON!!!!!!!

As a person who owns over 1400 graded cards including vintages 1s, 2s,3s..etc and has sent in vintage, modern, etc., I feel that I am a pretty good judge of grades. On modern stuff, I can get a PSA 10 about 30-40% of the time, a PSA 9, 60-65% and lower grades for the last 5%. On vintage, I'm pretty close and if not on, usually within a grade.

As for those being 6, or 8... I don't think so. I have a post in the forum about how I visually inspect every card I send in. I also have a few apps on my phone for additional checks. That being said, I am not a professional grader, so these are my opinions from the data provided.

Please don't be angry, upset or otherwise make bad remarks. I am giving an honest opinion from a few photos.

Ok here is the break down in via the pictures you submitted:

Mantle Front - Off centered, bottom corners are starting to show some very minor rounding
    Mantle Back - pretty clean

Can't see the surface, or edges really, but a closer guess would be 4-5

Aaron: Again looks great!!!!! I can't tell for sure, but from the photo of the back, about 3/4 of the way down the right side it looks like a ding on the edge? Bottom corners are slightly rounded. Centering is better than mickey, color and eye appeal look good. edges, like Mickey. more likely 5-6 range

Sandy: same bottom corner issues (look from the back) and very slightly OC. Beautiful eye appeal 5-6 range

Mays: pitting on the edges (not sharp), same lower corner issues as others.OC (Top to bottom) 4-5

Rose: upper right corner ding, lower right corner slight rounding, OC, back greater than 90/10 oc - 4ish

Feel free to take a photo of each corner, of each edge, the surface (not in a plastic case), and scan them in and look for imperfections. PSA lists there grading standards here: https://www.psacard.com/gradingstandards

    Apps: gradea.id, Card boss, cardly.ai

Incredibly grateful for your detailed response. I have a little over 500,000 cards and absolutely 0 graded. I was a wax pack junky in the late 80s, early 90s but then stopped seriously buying in the mid 90s. That being said, I bought this set when I was 14 and put it in penny sleeves and top loaders immediately. It was in a shoe box :(. I can't even see the rounding you mentioned, which shows how far removed I am from grading and what is expected on older cards. If I work up the muster to pull one of those out of their sleeves tonight I'll take some better pictures.

I am going to "ditto" Rich's comments...absolutely beautiful cards...dont have any but wish I did...and as I was scrolling down and looking at your cards...my 2 cents worth...centering is huge...and white on a corner...same...I think all of those will grade between a 4 and a 6...
My want list and trade page is here...

    @brianmmorgan

I will set up my website with a few of my cards for comparison. I have over 1400 graded, will go to over 1500 as soon as the mail gets here in a week or so. i have Vintage, even sold a PSA 5 1941 Playball Joe DiMaggio on this site. Those cards are beautiful, and I'll be happy to take a look again with more of different pictures and or scans of the cards to give you an estimate, but. I'm usually not that far off. Each card I send in, takes me about 30 min to an hour to review. It's a process and this last batch, in my opinion, failed.

My newest grades just popped today. Here are a few of the estimated grades. I also got a bunch that were lower than expected, some by more than 2 grades, so I rarely make a mistake in my favor. LOL

1990 Fleer Update Emmitt Smith - Estimated PSA 10/9 - actual PSA 9 (direct from unopened sealed set to penny sleeve to PSA
2005 Topps Chrome DeMarcus Ware Blue Refractor (RC) - Estimated 9/10 - Actual 8
2010 Topps Dez Bryant (RC) - Estimated PSA 10 - Actual PSA 10
2010 Topps 52B Bowman Dez Bryant (RC) - Estimated PSA 10/9 - actual PSA 10
2010 Playoff Contenders Rookie Roll Call Dez Bryant - Estimated PSA 10 - Actual PSA 9
2010 Playoff Contenders Rookie Roll Call Dez Bryant - Estimated PSA 10 - Actual PSA 10
1981 Topps Joe Montana (Rookie) - Estimated PSA 4 - Actual PSA 4
1981 Topps Coke Header Card - Estimated PSA 9/10 - Actual PSA 8 (highest graded, Pop 3)
1990 Score Supplemental Emmitt Smith (RC) - Estimated PSA 9/10 - Actual PSA 8 - again, direct from a sealed set to penny sleeve to PSA. ( x2, yes thought 9's would be minimum, both were 8)

I still would send them in. It only enhances the value.

Leave them in the sleeve....Take a pic of each corner with good lighting, front and back. Take a pic overall front and back. If you have a scanner, scan them, I find more imperfections on scans that photos. No idea why... I'll look again.
