    Favourite Cheap cards

So I know hockey cards have been over produced, however I do think some card sets were at a great entry level price point. Allowing collectors to get their feet wet, so to speak.

So on whole I did not love Victory, except for their subset of Warriors on Ice.I did enjoy collecting the silver script Collectors Choice.

Well, if you're on a budget, UD MVP can never go wrong. I mean, tons of hits with the autos, and some of the hard-to-pull with long odds to be had. You have all the rookies to boot. Of course, many folks hate the low-cost option. Just so much cheaper and more folks can afford to swallow breaking a few of these than taking a week's pay to get a box of The Cup. Of course, one guy said I was a dealer promoting UD MVP, lol.

Series 1/2/Extended and O-Pee-Chee are pretty much the only entry-level products left at this point. Of course, PWHL Flagship for fans of the women's game. Virtually everything else has been reconfigured towards a "hits-only" model with limited/no base cards to appease the primary openers of product in 2026: the breakers.

I have no ill will towards the breakers, that's where the hobby is at now. If a group is going to break 50+ cases of a product online, they should have a little more influence than some random guy online that breaks 1-2 boxes. It's funny how the latter complains that breakers "get all the hits" while they get a "random" box that has merely the prescribed minimum. Like, yeah, that's how statistics play out, my dude.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

MVP and Victory were the go to sets, either for people (re: KIDS) getting into the hobby, or fellas on a fixed budget. Investors basically screwed that for the younger generation getting in on the ground floor, with their "but we neeed SOMETHING to justify spending our money!" Now, it's all about return on investment, so kids just starting out, have no hope of finding decent starter sets.
Always looking for Senators cards! Must be a draft pick, or the card is identifiable as a Senators card before I want it!
As most of you know, I suffered a fairly severe stroke in April '25, so mail goes out anytime!

I didn't fully realize until last night when I was at Players Choice that they brought back Ultra.

    AND IT'S $500 A BOX

Jason cracked one, because nobody else was, to get an idea of what's in there. You get one auto per box, and an assortment of parallels and some #'d inserts.

It looks like. It has some cool callbacks.

    But my goodness gracious....

That doesn’t make sense. I wouldn’t just go buy some nice cards for my PC. I could but a very sweet Brodeur for that price.

As someone who started on score 90-91 I can attest to having starter sets are awesome for getting engaged with the hobby. Yay the cards aren’t worth the paper they are printed on, but one day I plan to finish the set.

OPC is my favorite lower-end product now. MVP was good 25 years ago, but it's not as good now. You can try SP retail if you want something different, not the most popular set, but it's affordable and you get a shot at a numbered rookie parallel, some jersey cards in there too.
