Important Question Check Fraud
I have a bit of a problem, I am selling an item on craigslist and I know the person buying my item is trying to pass me a bad check and get me with check fraud.
Here is what the person is trying to do. Give me a check to cash which is "accidentally" more then the price of the item. When the "mover" comes to get the item I give them the mover the difference.
Rather then just letting it go I want this guy to get caught in the act so this doesn't happen to anyone else. Does anyone know of an agency I can contact to get this guy. I live in NJ 5 miles outside of NYC. If you can help me or give me some info please let me know.
Thanks

If he is giving you a bad check, how will you be in trouble for check fraud? You also say he is trying to pass you a bad check.....why even accept it?
I've never used Craigslist, but I don't understand.

I haven't been given the check yet, thats why I am asking who to contact to get this guy. He is trying to get me with a fraudulent check and I want to get him in the act. If you can supply me with info I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Is it possible to wait for the check to clear before you have the mover pick up whatever he is picking up?

It sounds like a scam that went around a few years.
They get the item and the difference and a few days later you get a call from the bank saying the check is no good.
So you get stuck paying any and all fees, plus your out your item, and they are in the clear.
This was a big thing on several gun sites I visit. I had the same thing offered on several occasions, when I said no checks unless you wait for it to clear before recieving the item...I never heard from them again.

I would try calling your local police non emergency hotline if you have one, and see if they can do anything.

Ya i'd say its a scam...why cant they just write a check for the acual amount?
Plus like another poster said...it was a scam that was going around for quite a while...Just be careful with it. Contacting the police and getting their advice would be a great way to go about it too

Calling the police is a good first step--hopefully your local police are sharp enough to do something about these scammers. Also, check out Check Overpayment Scams: Seller Beware from the U.S. government Federal Trade Commission. Very important:
If you think you’ve been targeted by a check overpayment scam, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).
Hope that helps!
