Player Collecting
I was just wondering how do people stick with a player collection so long. Any input would be great.

It's all a matter of choosing players you are prepared to collect for the long haul. It helps to have a reason. For instance, I collect Sam Aiken and Manny Lawson. Why? Because I used to watch Sam Aiken play in high school and he was a beast. As for Lawson, he grew up basically in the same town I did and went to a rival high school. Plus, he went to NC State (my fave college) and plays for the Niners (my fave pro team). My wife collect Chris Weinke (diehard Panthers fan and loved his last name).

Yeah usually you pick a player because you have a connection with them. Like I collect Shawn Bryson because he went to my high school and I've played basketball with him. And one of the only basketball players I collect is Rashad McCants because I played against him in middle school (before he moved to the prep school up north) and he was on UNC, my favorite college bball team. And the Clemson guys I collect b/c I graduated from Clemson and LOVE Clemson football. So that always helps instead of just picking someone.
But then again, I also collect Brian Calhoun for no other reason than his senior year at Wisconsin I watched several of his games and thought he was great. And David Legwand in hockey, I collect him because he plays for the Predators, which is my favorite team...but he's my favorite player because when I started getting into hockey, I bought NHL 2003 for the PS2 for $9, and he was the best player on my team...so I started liking him even more. That's probably one of the lamer reasons to collect a guy...but when you just get someone like that, it's just easier for some people to remain loyal than others. I'm a stubborn person and when I get something in my head, it sticks.

I picked Edgerrin James b/c Barry Sanders retired and I wanted to collect an exciting running back. I was watching Edge in a college game and loved how he never celebrated or anything. Once he got drafted I started collecting him a little and then started really buying his stuff in 01. I liked his crazy long hair and the way he played the game. He still never celebrates touchdowns and goes about his business pretty quietly. Its also fun once you start getting a lot of their stuff and being able to follow their career. Good luck w/ whoever you choose, but its a lot easier to keep it to one or two guys.

Lets see..here are my reasons why I chose the players I chose:
Maurice Drew-Watched alot of his college games on TV from his junior and senior years and really liked how versatile he was..he can run through you or run circles around you haha
Marshawn Lynch-about the same reason as stated above^^^
Maurice Stovall-Watched him all through college because I am a huge ND fan and then he got drafted to my favorite pro team!

Pretty easy...I do it because I enjoy collecting and the hobby (NOT for profit)...look at the collection from different angles which gives you my collecting options are well such as collecting "premium" serial numbers 1st, jersey #, last, OR buying other things with the players likeness on it such as T-shirts, memorabilia, etc...by looking at the collection from different points of view you will not get "bored". JMO
I narrowed my collecting focus in 1999 to collect one player and to this date have stuck with it! That's EIGHT plus years! The most complete/comprehensive single player collection in the world with 95% of his Known cards & 400+ #1/1s.
