Expos P Day ejected for having illegal substance on fingers
May 17, 2003
SportsLine.com wire reports
DENVER -- Montreal Expos pitcher Zach Day was ejected in the third inning against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday after the umpiring crew determined he had an illegal substance on his fingers.
Day allowed two hits in the first two innings before walking Ronnie Belliard to lead off the third. As Belliard made his way to first, Expos manager Frank Robinson, pitching coach Randy St. Claire and trainer Ron McClain went out to the mound after the umpires questioned Day.
Home-plate umpire Bill Miller and second-base umpire Joe West talked with the Expos coaches for several minutes before calling the rest of the crew to the mound.
Robinson and St. Claire pleaded Day's case for several minutes, with St. Claire rubbing his fingers together several times, but to no avail. St. Claire was still talking to the umpires when Robinson walked away from the group to signal for Claudio Vargas from the bullpen.
Day stayed in the background with a dejected look on his face as the coaches talked with the umpires. He got a pat on the side from catcher Michael Barrett after realizing he had been ejected, then slowly made his way to the dugout.
Day, a groundball specialist, was 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA in 17 relief appearances as a rookie last season, but moved into the Montreal's starting rotation this year with a solid spring.
Day has been the best pitcher on a Montreal staff hit hard by injuries with a 4-1 record and a 2.73 ERA. Opponents have hit just .235 against him and he has the best road ERA in the majors at 1.37.
The 24-year-old right-hander also has the best ratio of getting groundballs with four for every flyout.
Day earned the fifth spot in the rotation coming out of spring training, but was bumped up to fourth after Orlando Hernandez went down with a shoulder injury. The Expos also are without Tony Armas Jr., who is scheduled to have shoulder surgery Friday.

It sounds like to me that the umps had a heads up on Day so this probably wasn't the first time he was suspected of such a thing.

You know, in basball, nothing you do will ever get by the opposing coaches and team. They watch everything you do, esp. if you're a pitcher...so that the slightly miscue will result in them finding you did something wrong/illegal

So what happens to him now? A suspension?
