Take a test: Media Brainwashing
Let's see if you are influenced by the media. Don't use Google to find the answers!
Do you know who Al Gore is?
How about the leading climatologist in America?
Do you know who Sean Penn is?
How about the commanding General in Iraq?
Do you know who Cindy Sheehan is?
Can you name another mom who lost a son in Iraq? (There are over 3,000+ of them)
I bet you and 99% of American know who Al Gore and Sean Penn is and their platform, but have no clue who the commanding general in Iraq is or the leading climatologist is? Most Americans know who Cindy Sheehan is, but not the mothers of the other 3,000+ service men who died in Iraq. People with limited knowledge influence millions and experts are not heard. One mom is heard but 3,000+ are not because they don't speak or are ignored.
The media plays a part in informin and educating. In my view they "selectively" inform and educate you to the news that fits their agenda.

Mike,
I agree with you on this and will be the first and foremost that I had no clue on the Climatologist. Of course I can remember some of the mothers recently as they had laid their sons to rest here in KY.
On the quote above I think we all like to show facts and data that support our argument. It that simple as when you wrote your paper on affirmative action I am sure you laid it so all the facts, figures, details, quotes, etc. where all in favor of your position. So to fault the media for that is just that. If you owned the media I am sure you would be tainting it with your left, right, or down the middle views.
Media congomerates are owned by people and in the end their thoughts is projected in the news as they show what they want. I never seen you or Crit agree on political debates as you both presented facts to shore your argument. You guys would spend countless hours debating back and forth and in the end made no progress. If you want to make a change start making a PUBLICATION ON THIS FRONT, buy stock or take over a existing media conglomerate, etc.
p.s. Who doesn't in this world select the information for their agenda??? Would it serve your purpose to show all the infromation that was contrary to it??

Mike,
Media is a business, like anything else. You print what sells. Most people, unfortunately, don't care who the leading climotologist is or who lost a song in Iraq (unless it's in their hometown or area). It's a shame that Hollywood crap, stuff that used to be page 5 or 6 is now on the front page. But, news has to compete against many other things now and sometimes you have to grab their attention with things that aren't exactly newsworthy.

Exactly. It's a shame that the media can't cover more of the prosperous Kurdish region in the North. I agree that the secular progressives want us to
lose in Iraq as another reason to hate bush, and as a stepping stone for the 08 election

For instance, today all you hear about is Nocle Smith. You will hear about this for months. How much attention did Gerald Ford get, an ex-President of the United States? Much less!
The media HATES Ford for pardoning Nixon and most young Americans have no real clue who he was.

Well, we went over this in journalism class today. Why is this ***** getting so much coverage? For something to be news worthy, it has to hit on a few criteria.
Bizarre - Hell yes! She's a mess. A drug user, gold digger, her son died five months ago, she was young (39), recently had a daughter that is involved in a paternity battle, had a lawsuit against her and Trimspa.
Prominent - Former Playmate of the Year, once had the highest rated show on E! with her reality show.
Conflict - the paternity battle, also many people have questioned her parenting skills throughout the years.
Currancy - She's been in the news a lot for reasons above.
Proximity - She's not close to me in any sense of the word, but to others. She's a 'rags-to-riches' story, so some people identify with that.
Timeliness - She died yesterday. Autopsy today.
Impact - May not hit on this one so much, but who knows? With the reasons above, surely one of those issues has some kind of impact on your life.
As for Ford. He was certainly prominent, but it was a matter of time. He was in his 90s, correct? He also kept a rather lowprofile after his presidency.
Anna Nicole Smith is such a unusual story with so many things to talk about... that's why it's such a big story. Like it or not. I hate the coverage, but I understand why it's so big.

I think everyone needs to understand what the media is. A place where money is made. Just like every decision in America, it is based on money. Any decison the media makes is about weither they can profit from it or not. I would say that ,logically, most people should know that. Do they choose to pay attention to the media anyway? Of course. So it's hard to say that they're brainswashing us when we are seemingly choosing to be brain washed. Yes they spin truths, yes they are biased, but entertainment is entertainment in the eyes of most Americans.

The Anna Nicole story makes sense to me to be shown on Access Hollywood or Entertainment tonight, and shows like that...however in all my media classes...i couldnt tell you why FoxNews/CNN/etc are covering it...is it news worthy, yes, is it worth 4 hours of discussion and having different people on to interview...no...this reminds me of the coverage of when Princess Diana died...at least that was somewhat relevant.

I can tell you why Fox is covering it. Because they don't care about news, every piece of news they present to the world is completely biased. Bush won the popular vote in 2000? When watching Fox News, be in for a good laugh. I don't trust a word that they say.

lol, Exactly. You should check out the video "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdock's War on Journalism." It's a good look at how Fox News operates from people who worked there.
