We have cable. Never had DSL. Don't really know what the differences are.

DSL here, in comparing with neighbors and friends, I have 3.0 mb/s connection, and never suffer much lag during gaming sessions, while my friends and neighbors suffer lag during peak periods. DSL has no shared lines, it's a direct path to your phone line, while cable shares the line with the rest of the neighborhood. Also in my area we will soon be getting FIOS from verizon, which I will quickly be upgrading to, with a connection of up to 15mb/s, which pretty much will CRUSH cable speeds locally.

One important factor that will influence your DSL connection is the distance between your home or office and the phone company’s central office. The farther away you are from the central office, the signal becomes weaker, thus a slower connection.

It is going to depend on the area you are located. Overall, cable tends to have better speeds.

if u can afford cable...cable is better...i have DSL...and dont mind it, but would go cable if I could...only problems I have is my DSL goes out sometimes when it rains/snows...apparently this is a common issue with verizon...from different people I talk to but they tell everyone it's something that's specific to their individual situation.

and like chuck says DSL is based on location from the distributor

I am quite content with my DSL, have never had connection issues, and because my locale is so close to their hub, I get outstanding speeds. I am waiting for FIOS to get to this area and will be upgrading to it. As a gamer, connection is vital to performance playing on servers, since I have no problems I see no reason to go to cable.

For those unsure of their actual connection speeds I'd suggest several test sites:

    Speakeasy - Speed Test

    Bandwidth Speed Test

    broadband help » Speed Test

    Internet Download Bandwidth Test

Bandwidth.com | Free Bandwidth Speed Test, Bandwith Speed Test, Internet Connection Speed Tests, Check Band width Speed Free

Maybe even post your connection type and results.
