Rashard Lewis Is A Free Agent
Lewis Is A Free Agent
Jun 20 - The Sonics felt the need to refute a story in Tuesday's editions of the New York Post suggesting forward Rashard Lewis missed a contractual deadline to file for free agency.
"It's clearly understood by the Sonics and Rashard Lewis that he is a free agent," team spokesman Tom Savage said. "Nothing has changed in the past 24 hours. I don't know where that came from." -- Seattle Times
"It is a lot of to-do about nothing," said Tony Dutt, Lewis' agent, who was hired in February to replace Carl Poston. "The Sonics came out and said he is a free agent and the (players) union said he is a free agent and I said he is a free agent. There is no legs to (the report) at all."
Though Lewis said April 19 he would allow the Sonics to match any offer he gets from another team, Dutt said he would like Seattle to extend Lewis an offer July 1.
"We have asked for that," Dutt said. "We just felt like that was the approach at this stage -- he is theirs to lose. We want them to have first crack and see where they are. All we are asking is to find out where they are at." -- Tacoma News Tribune
Seattle's Rashard Lewis is indeed a free agent and plans to visit New York for a recruiting trip if Isiah Thomas invites him July 1, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Agent Tony Dutt, who goes way back with Thomas as Marcus Camby's first agent, told The Post yesterday Lewis will consider a half-dozen teams. -- New York Post
