2006 Topps Sterling - 1 Box - 1 Huge Hit
I have a case of 2007 Topps Sterling incoming, but to scratch the itch while I wait, I picked up a 2006 Topps Sterling box from Dave and Adam's (to make sure it's not the searched crap you buy on eBay). You may have seen my post over in the Baseball Card Talk forum where I ran the odds of obtaining each player in a case of 2007. I ran the same odds, but for picking one box out of the entire print run in 2006 (since I only bought one box). What's interesting about 2006 is that the odds for most players are much more similar than in 2007. The 2007 product has players that are much more common than others, while 2006 puts more players on about the same ground. Anyway, onto the box.
I gave the box to my girlfriend to open since she's the lucky one. She opened the outside box, popped out the mystery pack, and voila.... the box I was hoping for... Mickey Mantle. Now the odds on this are very good because they were seeded 1 per case, but that still doesn't make it a tremendously easy pull. Either way, I was ecstatic!
She opened it up - I wasn't expecting an autograph since the cuts are pretty rare, and in fact I did not get one. That's fine, at least my expectations were set correctly. I would have been happy with a 3 piece game used card numbered to 10.
Oh no - we pulled a HUGE card - we hit a #1/1 with 4 pieces including a PATCH, a gray jersey, a jersey with pinstripe right down the center, and a bat! What a freakin amazing pull! I've never seen Mantle patches anywhere but on this product, and to pull the #1/1 version of this card instead of the standard pull was spectacular! Obviously this box was well worth the money.
Just in case you were interested, I pulled a Cal Ripken Jr. White Suede #/50 out of the Mystery Pack - a little disappointing, but still a nice pull. The Ripken is FT/FS if anybody needs it.
The Mantle base are headed to my PC and obviously the #1/1 is now the crown jewel of my PC. Sorry, that one is NOT for trade.

Not really much to do about the damage - I find that these super-thick cards often end up chipped a bit in some way probably in the manufacturing process of getting the game used items into it and in handling. Unfortunately, that's how it came from the box.
I don't care at all - I still think it's a great card and a spectacular pull. It's not like anybody would have a need to grade one of these.
