The Beancounter
Hi to all you baseball card collectors.
This morning I was perusing the Baseball Today email. I read about about the great Nolan Ryan heading toward the top job with the Rangers and then linked up to this story about a Dodgers promotion in the '80's. It seems that with the team some 20 games out of the race, the managers cooked up the idea to let a fan pitch the first inning of a Sunday afternoon game. An accountant emerged from the tryouts and his debut made quite a splash! His name was Pedro Astacio....
"Astacio's first pitch was his best of the night: a ball, outside, which catcher Mike Scioscia snagged by diving to his left. It was the last pitch Scioscia caught on the fly.
Astacio got through the first inning as the promotion had promised. His line: 22 batters, 19 runs (all earned), 10 walks, 6 hit batters, 3 home runs."
