Need advice on Base cards
Question: Do many collectors buy boxes just for the autos and jersey cards and then pile up the base cards in a shoe box?
Here is why I ask. I enjoy building sets and searching for the missing cards. To buy a box or two can cost some cash and is a lot of fun putting the set together and buying the base sets from ebay is cheap and easy, but no fun.
So I am looking at this option...try to get unwanted base cards from box breakers. I came across the idea to search out base cards from other collectors b/c my friend opened two boxes of Gridiron gear and all he was looking for was the auto and jrsy cards. When he was done opening the boxes he gave me the base cards as well as some inserts b/c he did not want them. So out of the boxes he broke open I was able to build a set.
Am I just cheap and boring or is it my old school childhood collecting?
Thoughts?

I think it is great that you are using the cards to collect, not to just stick a price tag on them. I try and build sets too, but i usually fall a few cards short. The autos and GU are plenty cool though, and they have an influence on what i get, but i will not spend a ton of money just for those, ill get brands with a lot of base which i can collect. Im sure tons of people have base that they dont want that im sure you could get your hands on. Its a good idea.

i've only bought two boxes, and luckily i got a full base set in each one (they were both topps). i like to collect sets too, it is fun. i see some on ebay, and it would probably be cheaper, but i like trading. so basically i think i'm similar to you :) i think a lot of people buy boxes just for the hits, but it's harder for base collectors to trade for their base, because usually they will want something non-base in return (which we don't have as much of).
here on SCF i think i've had most success trading with other set collectors and also with people who do list their base cards on their sites (i find that many people don't even bother, so in those cases it is up to them to seek us out!)
