when u connect the ipod into your computer itunes should give you the option of erasing the previous owners material and load your itunes settings on it. you can't really keep anything of his if you want to load your own stuff on. but like i said there should be a little pop up that says something to the point of "would you like to erase the contents of So and So's Ipod and synchronize the ipod to your itunes settings." I just traded for a new nano on here and that is what it did on my comp. I have been able to load my stuff on it and buy new things from the itunes store just fine. I haven't found a way to rename the ipod tho. I think once you sync the ipod you can use it just fine with your itunes and itunes store purchases...not sure is this helps but i hope it does

PS-if your itunes doesn't give you this option you can restore the ipod which essentially erases everything and you start over new

there is a utility called copypod that will let you copy the music from your ipod to your PC. then you can reformat it using itunes.
