NFL Commisioner Roger Gooddell takes a break from writing his speech to announce the lifetime suspension of Chris Henry to approach the podium and announce "With the 29th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select University of Virginia guard Branden Albert"
NFL Combine Results:
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 309
40 Yard Dash: 5.17 seconds
225 Bench Press: 23 reps
Vertical Jump: 26"
Broad Jump: 9'3"
20 Yard Shuttle: 4.78 seconds
Mike Mayock Commentary: "This pick is a fantastic pick for the 49ers. He fills a pressing need and is by far the best player in the draft at his position. Many NFL scouts had this guy slated as a top 10 or top 15 pick and he has been touted as capable of playing both guard and both tackle positions. For the 49ers to get him at 29 can be considered a steal in my opinion. The 49ers gave up 55 sacks in 2007 and all three of their quarterbacks spent time on the sideline nursing injuries including a season-ending injury to starter Alex Smith. Similarly, Frank Gore's average yards per carry dropped from 5.4 in 2006 to 4.2 in 2007."
"The need to upgrade their WR corps is obvious but the need to protect the quarterback is much more pressing. With the top 4 wideouts gone off of the board and the recent signing of veteran WR Issac Bruce, the drafting of Albert makes perfect sense. Albert will step into the left guard position along side of last years first round pick Joe Staley and provide years of stability and blind-side protection for the quarterback."
Head Coach Mike Nolan comments: "We are very happy to get this guy. We figured he would be long gone by the time we picked. We have a lot of needs to fill including wide receiver and linebacker but we felt that Branden was the best talent still available that filled an immediate need. Regardless of which quaretback starts this season, he can drop back with some comfort in the knowledge that his blindside is well protected."
Offensive Co-ordinator Mike Martz comments: "I think this guy helps us tremendously. Our quarerbacks spent way too much time on their backs last season, our running game suffered because we couldn't open running lanes and our overall offense struggled because our line struggled to do it's job. Brendan gives us a big jump in the quality of talent up front and his versatility gives us the option to move him around if injuries to other players happen. In a pinch he can play left tackle in the event that Joe gets hurt, he can obviously play either guard spot and we feel confident that he could slide over to the right tackle position if we needed him to. I am very happy to get this guy and look forward to getting him in training camp and seeing what he can do and how much he will help us."

For the final pick of the first round, the New York Giants select Dan Connor (ILB, Penn State). The Giants could use a good safety here, but with Kenny Phillips off the board, I don't see any others going in the first round.
Dan Connor, Penn State
Height: 6-2. Weight: 234.
Projected 40 Time: 4.58.
Combine 40 Time: Did not run.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.67.
Benchx225: 21. Vertical 35.
Projected Round: 1.
Dan Connor had the flu and could not work out at the combine.
Determined to be the leader of Penn State's defense last year, Connor was finally be able to shine now that Paul Posluszny's off to the NFL. Suspended a few games in 2005 for prank calling former coaches.

Our mock draft is complete, I would like to thank everyone for taking this seriously and having fun, for the most part I think we have a really solid mock here, I would change a handful of things, but overall this is the fun of people with different opinions.
