Fake Patch Cards
Hello all. I have been reading a little bit about the hobby here and there and just got back into it about 3 months ago. How do you spot a fake patch card? What brands are most often faked? Any insight would be helpful to avoid being taken. Thanks.

One thing I've noticed is that if the patch looks too amazing to be true, be wary. People don't take the time to fake a single color jersey, because they're not going to make anything off it. The ones that I've noticed were full logos and stuff like that...
One of the easiest ways to spot the obvious fakes are to look up other patches of that brand. If they've put the patch in the wrong place or something along those lines, there ya go (and yes I have seen that happen). Also look at the numbering...if an awesome 4 color patch is serial #'d out of 200 or no serial # at all, probably fake.
Those are the things I look for, but I don't buy or trade for many patches...maybe some other members have better ideas for the really crafty cheats out there.

On most real patch cards, there will be a mark on the card somewhere around the patch (either above or below the patch usualy) that says something to the effect of "Authentic Game Worn Prime Jersey". If it is an amazing 3 or 4 color logo patch and it only says "Authentic Game Worn Jersey", that usualy gives it away that the real jersey was taken out and they replaced it with a fake. Hope this helps

Stay away from Sweet Spot Classics, Stay away from any non stock colors. The really weird stuff is the obvious fakes. And stay away from patches of HOFers before the 1975 cut. Only by those that are numbered, and make sure that the number is stamped in gold filigree or a moderation of the color of the card. (there ain't much other than that but the ones that have black stamps are the easy to fake items) but it really isn't an easy thing to do, and there aren't many fake patches out there. I've never come across one, just seen a couple on the bay and in the card shops. Hope this helps some. Thanks

fakes are usually done on square swatch windows - very hard to put a fake patch into a "die cut" window....also, be sure to check for damage around the swatch window....any kind of creasing, chipping, lifting, etc around a suspect patch is often a good sign

Donruss and Upper Deck since 2004 have placed special marks on the cards and they started logging the patches into a system. You can e-mail them a picture and 90% of the time they can tell you if they put that in there

This is the first one i have looked at on the bay and thought it might be fake. Ive looked at a lot of others of this same card and the patches on the others dont even come close. What does everyone else think?

Just read your post again and did some more looking. Guess the patch on the card above is legit since its a prime patch.

well they may have replaced like a 2 clr patch with that if a patch is THAT nice it would be less than 50
