I think more and more people are strictly auto/jersey/rc collectors now. personally i am with you and just collect whatever i like and whatever looks cool to me, regardless of cost or worth. Perhaps something else will come along over time, who knows what else can be invented. maybe jersey cards will become as common as inserts soon and something else will take over as 'rare'.
and i do remember when the autos were rare :) i probably bought 100 packs of skybox in 1996 till i got an autographics card and it is worth $15 today haha. i still love that card though because it was exciting back then and it's a memory in my collection now.

Good article by Dan,I remember when gu cards were one in 2,500 packs,I also remember my first one it came from 1997 ud football and it was a Joey Galloway silver seahawks swatch and the swatches back then were almost twice the size as most of them are now.Nowadays you can get just about any type of jersey from ebay for pretty cheap, which takes the fun out of collecting for me because I like the surprise factor,I get more excited when i pull a yankee card or insert than when i pull a cheesy white swatch gu of some nonamer who will never amount to anything in the hobby, just my thoughts take care Steve

Nice article. I think autographed/game-used/jersey cards really helped to boost the card industry. Everybody is after some kind of autograph.
