It's A Small World!
Long Story, But A Good One!
As many of you know, I live and teach in Mexico City, Mexico. Well, I'm originally from Springfield, Ohio. So it's Spring Break this week, and a friend of mine (who teaches with me and is from PA) and I decided to take a road trip down to Cuernavaca, Mexico, which is about 2 hours south of Mexico City. Upon arrival, we stop to get lunch at a restaurant there on the street.
As we're walking to our table, we get stopped by a table of elderly gentlemen who promptly ask us, in English, "Cedarville University, where's that?" My friend was wearing a Cedarville shirt, the college we went to. And we said it was in Cedarville, Ohio. Well, one of the gentlemen tells us he's from right outside of Cedarville, Ohio. I of course am freaked out because he claims he was from Springfield, Ohio, my hometown!
He proceeds to show me his checks from the bank he banks at, his drivers license, and everything to prove to me he's from there. I was amazed. Here in the middle of Mexico is this guy, a Korean War Veteran, from my small hometown in Ohio! He proceeds to tell me he married a Mexican woman after the war and has lived here in Mexico for 40 years. I mean, talk about a small world! He introduced us to his friends, who meet at the same restaurant everyday for lunch. Each of them has married a Mexican woman and they met randomly down here. Pretty awesome story. Here is a picture of the guys with my roommate and I. I'm standing in the black shirt. The guy in front of me, with the blue shirt, is the one from Springfield. You leanr alot from talking to seniors...I always go to the local reastraunts and chat with the old people while they drink coffee. Some very intresting converstations and alot of things can be learn by just sitting down for 15min.
Talk about a dream Retirment
