Anyone watch Deadliest Catch?
Anyone catch this show on the Discovery Channel? I was watching it saturday, and am officially HOOKED. These guys go out on the Behring Sea, fishing for (usually) Alaskan King Crab. They battle some of the worst waves/weather/ice in the world out on these boats, and there have been over 40 fatalities in the past decade. (Hence the name, Deadliest Catch.)

If you haven't seen it, check it out. A new season starts tomorrow.
So, anyone else watch this?

well they are making their yearly salary in a month, so they better make some money!! captains and full share crew members make good money over the 3ish months of fishing, but greenhorns dont make all that much (not enough to live on for the year)

true but think about it ... so you make a year salary in a month or two ... the other 10-11 months you take up a little part time gig and make more!! Just like the Ice Road Truckers ... some of those guys are bringing in $40K-$70k in a month of work and then leave there and go on to truck drive elsewhere!!

sure, like i said the guys that have been at it for a while, are experienced, make a good living (ive seen some numbers that break down to full share crew members making upwards of $40 an hour based on a 40 hour work week for the year).....40 bucks an hour is great, but when you are putting your life on the line, working 30+ hours straight, its not all its cracked up to be (try staying awake for 3 straight days, let alone working during that period of time - ive seen Sig do it!!).....greenhorns might only pocket 10-12 grand on their trip, for doing the real hard work.....alot also depends on the boat - the guys you see on TV aren't necessarily the norm.....there are bigger boats/crews than we see, and also much smaller boats/crews.....if you are on the Northwestern, you are making a good living!!
i just think sometimes it seems like a great job that anyone can do, make their money for the year in just a month or 2......reality is thats not really the norm....the DEADLIEST job out there, many die EVERY year!!
as an avid fisherman, definately something id love to try!! since the show started, its next to impossible to get on a boat though.....commercial fishing in the Atlantic is much more realistic!!
