I think this started with UD Black coining the term "white whale" which were packs that contained 1/1s. Then the phrase caught on, with someone wanting that elusive card, coming from Captain Ahab and Moby ****.

actually the term white started with the reference to Moby **** and has been around the hobby for quite some time...Topps stole that idea with its introduction of the White Whale 1/1s in its products.
