Students Want Chance to Defend Themselves
This is absurd. The last thing we need is a bunch of drunk college kids carrying guns. There's obviously a problem with guns in the United States. The solution to this problem isn't more guns.

I dont know if that would be a good idea or not. To me it would just cause more problems. What if someone got into an arguemnet over something stupid with someone else..they could say "Oh, well I was just defending myself." It'd just be a bad idea. But then I guess I could see the other side to it also but still not a good idea.

Bad idea. Like the article said, how would police know who's the bad guy if others have guns? People would get mad at someone over something stupid and threaten them or something. It would cause a lot more problems. I don't think I would feel as safe if my school allowed guns to be carried.

I think this would cause more problems than it would solve... Anytime you got into an argument with someone, they may go over the top and pull their gun on you.

wow, i think it is safe to say none of you are from Texas huh!!
Texas allows it's citizens the right to have a concealed handgun permit. In the 10 or so years since this has been allowed, the number of people with their permits who have committed a violent crime with their gun is less than 1 a year. The number of crimes prevented and/or disrupted is in the 100's.
Now, I don't want to give handguns to "drunk college kids" either. But IMO there are ways this could be done that would be a good idea. I believe in the case of the Virginia Tech shootings, even campus police were not allowed to carry guns.
The gun problems in America are is rarely caused by those who have theirs legally or those who go through the proper channels to get their concealed permits. All gun laws do is make it where only the criminals have guns!
Yes, if there is any doubt I am from texas and I am willing to admit that my opinions are influenced by my upbringing. LOL

Instead of giving them guns, why not give them security officers with guns?

I will admit that would be a step in the right direction and I would even say that would be good enough for me, if there are enough security guards at the campus.

I think the fundamental problem here is not whether or not kids should have guns, but more so, why are children taught to curl up in a fetal ball any time someone is threatening them? Instead of giving kids guns, teach them to stand up and fight. When that VA Tech nut-job went on his spree, if just a few kids would have rushed him, think of all the lives that would have been saved. Yeah, maybe one of the kids would have taken a round in the leg or its safe to say that one could have died, but it would have saved dozens.
Maybe I'm being unreasonable thinking that kids would be brave enough to charge a guy with a gun, but I really think the whole "it's ok to run away" mentality is not a road we need to continue down....
I apologize if my arguments seem disjointed. I've just woken up and am in a hurry to get to work. :-)

The problem with that is the fact that we have evolved to save ourselves. Its tough to overcome the barrier of selfishness and realize that two lives are worth more than one.
On the other hand, I'm sure you've been in an auditorium. There is no way you're running down to the front, then up on the stage--even as a group. The "duck and hide" method has been advised and instilled since elementary school.

Notice the Chevy/American flag hat on this nutbag. This guy is obviously a bloodthirsty redneck looking for a way to use the "it was coming right for me" routine on fellow human beings, like most of the pro-gun lobby is.
