    The History Behind Income Tax

I was watching the news today and they had a little trivia behind the income tax. Did you know that the income tax was established in 1861 to pay for the Civil War? Much like Social Security, it was a tax that was suppose to be temporary, but has turned into a permanent tax.

How much was the income tax in 1861? Three percent for anyone that made over $600!

Seems like a lot of taxes from back then were created to pay for wars. Learned that in my history class.. but I didn't know that about income tax! Pretty interesting piece of knowledge.

Saw some documentary on TV a few weeks ago about how there is no actual law on the books forcing people to pay income taxes. A few IRS agents testified on the video that they questioned their superiors and were subsequently fired. Interesting concept.
