Biggest problem for me is the retaliatory feedback. There are great deals on there these days in vintage. Best advice for eBayers - know who you are dealing with. Check feedback, it is a very important tool.

I quit using ebay as well, for all these same reasons. Its too easy to get hosed. I got $800 stolen from me in a deal a few years back, and tried filing a claim with them. It never even reached step 2 of the process, no matter how hard I tried. I know I'll never see that money again. It was a dutch auction too...there were 22 other people who also got the shaft.

yea I love ebay and its great prices as a buyer but hate it when I have to sell some stuffs there. Kind of two sided but this has to be true for everyone.
To make myself clear, I hate when I get claims on paypal for selling stuffs.
Obviously, they try to put all the responsiblities on the seller for lost or damaged items.

For example, someone buys a Kobe autographed card and let his kid play with it for a couple hours without sleeves and a top loader. This kid bends the card in half and completely destroy it. He filed a claim on paypal and state that the item was received completely broken.
Paypal would give the money back to the buyer if the seller receives the broken item back from the buyer because there is no proof of buyer breaking the item.
Kind of really unfair situation for the seller.

And I think ebay has helped the card market to stabilize the prices in some way.
We see less and less people asking for full BVs on the cards in the stores and at the show.
At the show I went to, there were plenty of sellers asking for 100-150% bvs on a lot of cards...
No way Im buying them, as I have Ebay lol

How do you know that he let his kid play with the card without a sleeve? How do you pack your cards.

Also, it's always the responsibility of the seller to make sure an item gets to the buyer in nice shape. If you bought a book from amazon, wouldn't you expect it to arrive in a timely manner and not be damaged. And if it was, wouldn't you expect a new copy or a refund? Just because isn't always a typical company doesn't mean the rules of business don't apply.

I have to agree with that one..
You should always have photos of you items on the auction to show the condition of the item prior to shipping. ALWAYS offer insurance even if it is optional. Any damage after shipping is then not your problem. HOWEVER, you MUST SHOW PROOF OF MAILING UNDER THE LAW!
Don't send anything to someone you don't know without saving a copy of your receipt. It MUST show the zip code at MINIMUM for the package. The best way is to send with Delivery Confirmation, or Signature required. Something where the package is scanned into the system as proof you mailed the item. If they take you to court and you can not show you actually mailed the item.. guess what, you loose!
I have a deal on eBay right now that I paid $150 to for some photos, and he claims he sent them but can't show me any proof. I have 2000 feedback, and he has 5000, but the fact remains he has my money and I don't have any photos. They claim they mailed them, but he has no record to show me they were actually mailed. Some of these photos were a STEAL, and my belief is that he wants to keep them since they didn't sell for what they are worth.
Can I prove he didn't send them.... NO! But I can prove he has my money, and he can't show me any proof he sent them out. I hate to push an issues such as this, but the sellers do have the responsibility to show "Proof Of Mailing" .... even if they feel they shouldn't have too.
Isn't that a fair thing to ask since I paid my $150+ on time to request proof that he actually did what he was paid to do... send me the product? Just my 2 cents..

yea i guess i was vague on that explanation.
I always ship the item with DC to protect myself and the seller.
And of course, all the items are packed well, (if cards, bubble mailer etc) and I have been getting good feedbacks on packaging big items like electronics.
I have been using ebay for a long time and became experts in packing haha.
Over the years, I've realized that I cannot be responsible all the damages that are caused during shipping that are not insured.
So I began the policy of uninsured damaged item during shipping is not the seller's fault.
Too bad paypal does not acknowledge the policy I have and gave the money back to the buyer.
And yes, I do not know if the buyer let the kid play with the item etc.
But if the item is truely damaged during shipping, how can someone explain that the external parts of the item is undamaged while the inside part is completely damaged?
idk, to be honest with you, i dont think the sellers have the responsibility for everything.
that sounds very unfair to me...

Kobe I FULLY agree.. if you can show the items condition when it sold paypal should not have taken the funds. . . Thats the problem with the world, their are too many who take advantage of others.. so much so you can't tell the honest from the dishonest anymore. I'm a firm believer in "What goes around, comes around!" You may not see it, but that buyer will get it in the end.. lets hope literally! OUCH..... //

cards are worth what people will pay, not what a book says. the Beckett still is good to give you an idea, but all in all the card is worth what you can get (in trade or money)

The quote above is so perfect. Ebay more than anyone establishes what a card is worth. When you have tens or hundreds of thousands of people looking at cards and buying them for WHAT THEY ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR THEM, then THATS WHAT THE CARD IS WORTH.

Sure, once in awhile some jerk will grossly overpay, or an auction will go sour and a card will go way too cheaply, but in general, it comes down to what is a card worth to YOU PERSONALLY.

Too many price guides in the hobby, and i am sick of publications that are 90% price guides printed every month. What a waste. You want to print the guide 3 or 4 times a year, go ahead, but every month? Why? Once you have a basic idea of what a cards "book value" is, you should be able to decide what it is worth to you.
