What does everyone think of the polygamists sect issue

This has been all over the news for a while now just wanted to see what everyone's thoughts are on this. They keep trying to defend them selves saying they are doing nothing wrong, but every time they are asked a question they either act like they didn't hear it or stall by talking about something completely different, I think they are without a doubt covering up the abuse, and think that these children should be removed from this place and put into homes where they can try to live normal lives. I find it hard to take a religion serious when it was founded by a man who put a "seeing" rock in a hat to receive visions and used special glasses which only worked for him to interpret a "sacred text" he found, but no one else could read, which was the basis for the whole religion. That's basically what Joseph Smith did when he founded Mormonism, which the FLDS is an offshoot of. And the polygamy part didn't come about at the beginning. After Joseph Smith had interpreted most of the Book of Mormon and already had some followers, he "had a vision" that God wanted him to have more than one wife. Doesn't it seem weird that after he saw his religion was catching on and that people looked to him as a spiritual leader he said "Oh yeah, and God said I can sleep with other women too?" Not to mention the fact that the Great Battle mentioned in the Book of Mormon, along with a lot of other major points, not only haven't been proved or have no corroboration, but a lot of it has been disproved. I read an article a couple of years ago where one of the top level leaders of the Church of the Latter Day Saints left the church because the evidence against it had become to great for him to logically believe anymore. Oh and did I mention he used the "seeing rock" to help people look for hidden treasure before he founded a major religion?

And I apologize if that offended anyone, that's just my blunt beliefs on the founding of Mormonism. I think a lot of great things have come from the religion and it's followers are some of the most devout people, which I think is great. But I do think the religion is founded on lies.

It's definitely a difficult situation though. I'm all for religious freedom and if polygamy is part of your religious beliefs, then who am I to say you can't do it. With the FLDS, however, it appears that they are definitely taking advantage of it. It doesn't say you have to have 7 wives, it says you can have more than 1 wife if you feel led. When most men have multiple wives and a girl rarely makes it past 16 or 17 without a husband, that seems a little suspect. And how can the girls argue? They are told they have to to get into heaven and if they don't, they're shunned by their family and everyone they know. Talk about pressure...

But how do you know when to step in? I don't think people under 18 should get married, but only because I think they're too young and dumb to make a decision like that. It's only within the last 100 years that 13-17 year olds getting married has become taboo, so I don't think that should be a factor. But if young girls are being sexually abused, that's a problem.

It's a situation that outsiders aren't really in the position to judge, although many people do far too quickly. But after years of this going on and the situation seemingly getting worse, it doesn't appear that anyone on the inside is going to try to change anything...Brigham Young took a stand and declared polygamy against the Mormon beliefs, but only after the government applied great pressure and threatened to take away their "promised land". So maybe applying some pressure to the FLDS will result in someone on the inside standing up to make some changes.

I don't think Mormonism is more far-fetched than any other religion. They all sound like science fiction to me.

With that being said, I don't support this polygamist movement.
