Custom Cards??

Just curious if anyone in the Racing area makes their own custom cards. I'm considering doing a series of cards for this year of about 15-20 drivers for myself, and also doing a race used sheet metal version of each.

I've seen some on other sites, and wanted to see what I could do, Been messing around with a Stewart as a Prototype. Any feedback would be great, as I often get sucked in when doing a project and have a hard time standing back and giving it a good look. Let me know what you think.

I really HATE IT.
And That is just My Opinion.
I personally think that Nascar should be all over
people making RU Cards.
I think It's is a Copy write issue.
If you plan on selling them on the Bay
Hope you say its a Hand made card.

I like the idea of making custom cards. I think it's a good hobby to do, especially if it's just for your own or friends personal collection. If you have plans on making some selling just make sure they're labeled as custom or somthing to let the buyer know it not from the card companies. I've been trying to find someone to make me a couple nice Julius Peppers custom cards for myself.

I have mixed feelings about this issue and let me explain...

I think that it's cool to do some designing on your own. Heck back years ago (back when I was in Jr High in the early 80's) I have done just that. I'd take newpaper pictures and some trimmed down 3x5 note cards and design my own. It was something that I really enjoyed for myself. Even when I was in College the 2nd time around, we'd take some of the NHL Pro Set Trophy cards and "custom" some trophys we gave out in our Sega Genesis Hockey League. I think I took some damaged 90/91 Upper Deck and made some cards with my friends heads on some of the players. And of course some of yall have seen my "parody" race used cards I've don the past week on here.

We have all seen the cards on eBay over the last few years with the Special Olympics 1 of 1 stamped or similar type foil being added. We've also seen the guys who take a piece of sheetmetal and affix them to the card. These are first and foremost attempts by people to rip off unsuspecting collectors.

Finally there are the ones where someone takes a picture of say Tony Stewart they find off the web and create a card design etc....

Here is the potential problem with this kind of thing....

#1 In order to mass produce any photograph, you need the expressed permission of the person who took the photo...otherwise it is copyright infringement against the photographer. Just like if I take a picture of my house, I own the implied copyright of that photo because I am considered by law as the "artist"

#2 If the picture is of a copyrighted image, then you need the expressed permisson of whoever owns that copyright. Reading from the back of a 2008 PP Premium Tony Stewart card... "Tony Stewart, #20, and The Home Depot licensed under authority of Joe Gibbs Racing, Huntersville, NC. Toyota trademarks used with Permisson." So even though the photographer owns that particular picture, the images are also copyright and as such you need their permission as well to mass produce it. And usually that means money.

#3 Let's say you got the permisson of the Photographer and in this instance JGR. THEN you would have to get THAT particular picture approved by JGR, etc.

Now I realize that you are talking about stuff for personal use. But if one of these you make as a gift or present ever makes it onto eBay and its traced back to you...not pretty.

Wow not the direction I was talking about.
First the cards are for personal use only.
And also TTM auto's, a possiblilty but they would only be for
myself. I quess I'll keep it as a personal project. Didn't think it would
be such an issue. And as far as I know it's illegal to sell someone else's work ie. photo.
I can't believe that people are doing that, if those are on ebay I would def. contact ebay about the copyright issues involved.

I know with hockey, esp. minor teams the players love them. And often ask for copies so they can hand them out to friends and family.

I got into doing it more with TTM items as I feel more comfortable sending a homemade card with the room for the auto instead of a huge 8x10 or a blank 3x5 card stock. But that's just my opinion.

Let me add this to this post. NASCAR is completely different then other sports when it comes to copyright issues. For them to have a card made it goes not only through the driver but also through the team, sponsor and sometimes NASCAR body itself for approval. That is one reason why there is only one manufactor of race cards. You will find sponsor affiliated cards out there but in that case they are approved by such.

Traders in the racing community have a very strong feeling when it comes to others making cards up. While yours were very high class cards and I think because you are kinda new to the community in racing people didn't know what to think. For most of us we are pretty tight. We have followed each other from site to site and sometimes they get over bearing. Nothing againest you though. At times we have had members to what you have done but in their case they have sold them on the bay. Two or three of those sellers now on the bay are past members that we know and have tried to get something done. Ebay won't do anything with just us protesting, they say it has to come from NASCAR and these sellers are getting better at the way they list their auctions. We just try to smoke them out and make others aware of what they are doing. We have one member here that is very good at this sort of thing, Thanks to him,.

It is very hard to keep up with all the fake cards on ebay now. For most of us we can easily spot them just by knowing they are not recognizable insert names or they are 1/1 but there is are lot of people getting ripped off out there. Making your own sounds like a great hobby for personal use but I feel that they should never under any circumstances be sold just b/c it causes too much trouble to the hobby, I don't feel like they should even be distributed anywhere else as it can only hamper the hobby particularly effecting supply and demand which will eventually hurt the value of the real cards.

Does sound like a fun and great thing to do for personal use so more power to you if you want to do that, I couldn't ever find the time to branch into that :)!
