Building the 2006 Playoff Contenders Set
I made a thread when I started about three weeks ago or so, and some people said to keep them updated, so here it is:
I currently have 56 of the rookie autos with 3 more on the way. I was able to get about 40 of them for under $3 a piece at a show. I purchased two boxes to get 8 of them, including MJD and Colston who both book at $100. I have traded for some and purchased some on SCF as well. Just recently started on ebay and am waiting for a couple I got really cheap on there as well.
So I still need 83 autos, including most of the big guns, but I am on my way to completing this. Thanks for the read, questions, comments, or free autos to complete my set are welcome.

ahhh, something i am interested in, however, i chose to start my set building with this years playoff contenders 2007 set. I like the clean look and style of the cards and I currently have 100 of 140 auto tickets! Glad to hear you are doing the same with the 2006 set, there is one selling on ebay for 3,000 OBO but i bet if you are patient enough you will get there for half of that. I am currently 800$ invested in and only have 40 autos to go and 20 of those are small named players. My goal is to complete the set at around 1500$

That is sweet! I like the look of the 07 contenders better than the 06, but I love the 06 rookie class and they are pretty down in value right now so I thought it was a good time to buy. I haven't really thought about how much I have spent yet, but let's see here:
$210 for 2 boxes + $105 for about 40 of them + $25 from SCF + $20 from ebay = $360 and I have 60 of 142, I also traded for 3 of them, but I didn't trade anything I was really attached to. Problem is I need just about all of the top rookies, like Bush, Leinart, Cutler, Young... $1500 seems like a pretty good estimate, if I can find good deals on the more expensive guys then maybe something like $1200, but probably closer to $1500.

Its a good time to pick up a vince young, reggie, or leinart but I have realized make sure you check completed auctions all the time and see what the going rate of these cards are. I think sometimes people spend too much time looking at the beckett to determine how much they will pay and end up overpaying for a card. So far I have purchased all my 100 cards at 50% of lo book value in the beckett, i have excel spreadsheets from my contenders sets with plenty of data. Anyways, its nice to know there is someone else out there enjoying these sets. The value on these sets maintain over the years, unlike 95% of all other autographed RC sets.

Yeah, I am always checking the completed listings to see what they finish at. So far I have purchased 3 on ebay for a total of about $19 shipping included with a BV of $80, I'm not sure what the low values are, but 25% of the high value is pretty comparable. I imagine the Bush, Leinart, Cutler, Young I will have to pay probably 50% of the high at best, I haven't seen any go for cheaper really. Some of the low printed SPs are hard to get too. I was looking at the 07 contenders in beckett and saw the Kenny Irons was some ridiculous bv because it was SPed to 50, did you pick that one up yet because that will be tough to come by. The lowest SP for the 06 set is Marcus Vick at 149, haven't seen one yet but it books at $100 or $120 so it shouldn't be too tough to get.

No, that is one I refuse to buy for now. I created an excel spreadsheet checklist with a lo and hi beckett value collumn and what I have been averaging for each card. I wouldn't even look at the hi beckett value, I only look at the lo beckett value and I have managed to get my cards ranging from 70% to 25% of lo beckett value based on rarity, player etc. I only need 40 more and 23 of those are common cards...that range from 1-3 dollars each depending on how patient I am. I picked up a jarvis moss on the bay the other week for 9 bucks and it books for lo beckett value of 30 :) I have yet to buy a card that has creeped above lo beckett value...the only cards I have seen doing that are AP,Kenny irons, dwayne bowe, and trent edwards and a few sp's such as thomas, anderson, and willis but they are high because people are retarded and want to finish their set quickly at any cost. There is no value in lineman overtime so they will go down and I will snag them.

Just picked up 3 more thanks to Pittblitz, now have 63 of 142. I am pretty disappointed in losing an ebay auction though, Delanie Walker SPed to 214 the bidding really picked up inside 45 minutes and it went for about $5 more than I was willing to pay.

Just reached the halfway mark with 71 autos in possession or on the way and 71 autos to go. Really happy I just won the Derrick Ross SPed to 250 on ebay, books at $80 and I got it for only $13!!! Still need almost all the top guys with only about 20 or so of the 71 I still need being commons so the hardest part of this set is left to come.

Awsome man, I am currently at 103 of 140. I picked up a james jones auto and a few common autos. I have about 17 or so commons left to fill in the set with. I have been picky because i am trying to maintain my goal of completing the set for 1300$. I am around 800$ at the moment according to my excel worksheet :) picked the jones up 11 dollars dlvd and the commons were like 3 dollars each dlvd cause i bought them in bulk.

Wow, nice work. I am probably going to try and get some of the big names at Nationals since I live near Chicago I will be heading at for one day. What I want to do is pick up as many guys who I think will have good years as I can and then wait on the guys who I think will see price drops. Definitely want to get Tarvaris Jackson soon, but wait on a guy like LenDale White.
