Set collectors: Do we get treated right?

    Nice article by razzamaztaz.

Once upon a time, there were a kingdom called Collector’s Paradise. In this paradise all citizens were happy, the Rulers provided them with exciting new releases a few months apart, big base sets with splendid designs and well done photo work. Each collector cared to flip over the card and read stats or neat details about the specific player.

Love the article! This year I put together the OPC set. It took a while but it was an interesting set to build. With most sets being 100-200 cards one can get the impression that there are only 100-200 players in the league. There are some players that just do not get any coverage. I loved the opc set because I got the chance to check out the players who do not get a lot of press.

    Thanks for your article

These days there is no middle ground between "not worth collecting" and "impossible to complete." It stopped being rewarding to be a set collector in 1996. So I only complete sets from before then, except for ones that are easy to complete without trying very hard, like regular old Topps. The most impressive set I ever completed was 1993-94 Stadium Club Basketball First Day Issue, set size 360 cards, print run 1,000. Those were one per box and the set was huge. If money is no object, it's a lot harder to complete sets like that than these Exquisite things with patches the size of New Jersey and print runs of 50 or less, because there's only about two dozen different cards in those sets.

I still like completing sets, but I agree with gatorboy that it changed a lot around 1996. More high end sets and sets where the rookies were either seeded or serially numbered started coming out around that time or shortly afterward, so it's tough these days to finish a "true" complete set. I still do a lot of the sets though without the rookies.

Im in the same boat, I love set collecting. I only have 3 of the newer sets going from 2005 to now. I can't afford boxes on my single income for the nicer boxes so I have to find deals to be able to get a good start on a set.
