One of my all time favorite autograph stories is from Mr. Probert. I had gone to a card show many years back when the Blackhawks were promoting Probert, Cam Russell, Enrico Ciccione and Jim Cummins as "The Toughest Men in Hockey". I happened to walk into the show, pick up an 8 X 10 of the four of them and decided to get all their signatures.
But I was too late to get Probert. He had sold out.
So, I picked up the other three and about a year and a half later, saw Probert was signing at another card shop. I wanted to finish the photo, so I drove 2 hours to get his autograph on the photo.
As I got up to him in line, they handed him the photo and he just stopped and said, "Oh wow!" He spent a good minute just looking at the photo. He finally said, "I miss these guys. I can't believe they're all gone." (meaning off the Blackhawks). He looked at me and asked me where I got it, and I told him the story. He smiled, set the picture down and carefully and graciously signed the photo and said, "Well, now it's finished."
I thanked him and he looked at me and said, "No... thank you!"
I didn't know much about hockey back then, other than to know he was an enforcer. But definitely saw a very human side to one tough SOB.
RIP, Mr. Probert. Thanks for the memory.

I also met and got an auto last year of Probie at last year's Blackhawks Convention. Waited a good couple hours but he stayed for everyone and signed. He was very kind and had a great handshake.
RIP Probie.

For all the knocks on George Steinbrenner, he insisted that everyone in his organization be winners. He was one of the few owners that gave his teams the resources to win and he actually had a backbone! I'm not a Yankees fan but I'll always treasure my signed baseball from the Boss.

Before there was Rick Ankiel, the NY Giants had Clint Hartung, the Hurricane from Hondo, Texas. Known for his prodigious power and golden arm, the Giants signed Hartung to a large bonus and injuries derailed him from living up to his potential. A switch to the outfield extended his career for a few more seasons after his pitching days were done. Read above for more on his career and passing.
