Something I noticed about Upper Deck jerseys
I read the back of the 08-09 UD jerseys that I pulled, and they say "this piece of memorabilia has been certified to us as having been used in an NBA game". It doesn't say that the same player on the card actually used it,though! It's technically and legally possible that the jersey was from another player! I just found that little loophole interesting. I always thought they stated that "this was certified as being used by (player's name)", much like the jersey cards that are not game-used, just a manufactured patch or piece of jersey.
Anyone have any ideas? Doesn't bother me one way or the other, but I just find it kinda deceptive if this is the case.

For all we know, it could have been part of a towel that the towel boys used to mop up sweat.

I pulled an 08-09 Shawn Marion GU from a blaster. It says "On the front of this card is a piece of memorabilia that has been certified to us as having been used by Shawn Marion as a member of the Phoenix Suns in an NBA game."
That's a bit clearer than usual for UD. But there are still two obvious, glaring problems:
- There is no way to tell its an actual jersey piece (warm-up, shirt, etc)
- How late is UD for still using Suns stuff for Marion? It was at least 6 months from the trade and the product release...
But really, for any GU card, there is no real way to tell if its an actual player jersey. Maybe there's more 'believability' if there is blood or dirt or something, but for the most part, it is as though we have to blindly believe the companies about these things.

i guess if it was not used in a game as they say the company could be in trouble for fraud? there's probably something they could get in trouble for if that was the case.

yea I have a few cards the say "this hat was used in the rc photo shoot and worn by luol deng" or "this gu piece of the basketball was used "offically"(lol) in a vancouvor grizzles game"
But I guess it's blind faith plus I agree w/ molly

Well, of course. That's why I'm bringing up the fact that they don't actually say the player on the card is the one who wore the jersey like other ones do. That leaves it open that another player entirely could have worn that jersey! Like The Manishere said....his Marion jersey clearly states that it was worn by Marion in a game. Others explain that it was "worn" by a player for an event or photoshoot, so not actually a GU card.
It could just be a simple manner of the way the cardback was written out, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out later that some of these GU jerseys are from a random player, and not the guy on the card who you assume it would be. We've had similar things happen in the hobby. Honestly, how many people are even going to notice or question something like this, except a dork like me with too much time on my hands?
I don't work for a card company, so I don't know exactly how they obtain the jerseys, who pays for them, how much they are, or if jerseys cost more because of the caliber of player or not. The skeptic in me can just see a situation where they have an extra Dermarr Johnson jersey, or can get an identical Denver jersey from some bench scrub for pennies compared to the Iverson or Carmelo, and it's "game-used", so we'll throw the pieces in a card, put those guys on the card, and call it good? Who's gonna notice? And legally, we'll have it covered on the back of the card in case some crackpot actually notices and tries to file a legal complaint over a basketball card! (not me!)
Again, it is just something I noticed, and a scenario that I could totally see happening. I don't really care one way or another. It doesn't de-value the card or anything to me. Who cares, honestly. It's just a tiny piece of a jersey. It's probably not even true. It's probably an actual Iverson swatch, and they just didn't word the cardback very clearly. I'm just saying.......

Yeah, I see what you're saying about that, the word choice covers them basically, so you may never know :) But just hope that it really is for the player on the card.
I kind of wish they would put which game on the back. I guess it would take too much organization to keep track of all the items they have, but it would be cool to know.
