Yes, but it is an improper word. If you break the word up, it is simply the plural of "one," which is an oxymoron.

Would you also suggest that singles, singularities, and individuals are improper?

    Don't forget soloists.

Improper or not, it fits with the sentences that have been given. Sure there are ways to re-word most sentences that use the word "ones" but the same can be said for just about any word.

While I see your point in that the "plural of one" concept doesn't really seem to fit with grammatical usage, ones is a word.

I don't use "ones" all that often, but I do use that way too often. :)

Haybier... Yes, in fact, I do argue against those words, but I find more professors agree with "ones" being improper than those.

In four years, I will most likely be an English professor. An "A" paper will not contain any of those words. It's not a matter of opinion; rather it's my decision to uphold the sanctity of our language.

I agree with you on "that". I also rally against the word "it". Too generic, too non-descript, too LAZY!

"It" is definitely a tough one! Here's a few more issues:

    Sentences ending in a preposition.
    Sentences beginning in a conjunction.
Capitalization of the word following a colon.

Do a Google search for "Grammar Girl" and pose your question to her. She answers grammatical questions. If she agrees with you, throw it in the face of your professor.

In my undergrad years, a professor marked a question wrong regarding a novel, and I e-mailed the author of that novel and she agreed with me, and the professor was quite impressed when I approached him. If it wasn't for that professor, I wouldn't have went to graduate school.
I'm always looking to trade cards for original Nintendo (NES) games. Always looking for 86-87 Fleer basketball - even commons - the more, the better :) Also, when sending cards out, please make certain the cards are well-protected and well-packaged.
