Mets Locker Cleanout Day at Shea

I went over today to take some pictures of the Park before it comes down and I tossed a dozen baseball's I've had in my room along with some 8x10's in my backpack. I would up getting 9 signed balls and 2 photos.

On the balls I got Omar Minaya, Sandy Alomar Sr, Howard Johnson, Ramon Martinez, Daniel Murphy, Nick Evans, Damion Easley, Brian Schneider and John Maine. On the photos I got Endy Chavez (Photo of his NLCS Catch) and Brian Schneider.

I also saw Nelson Figueroa, Ricardo Rincon, Gustavo Molina, Aaron Heilman, Jon Niese and Sandy Alomar Jr. but I didn't have anything for them cause I didn't want to not have a ball in case one of the Stars showed up.

Later in the day Carlos Delgado showed up and said he would sign on the way out but never showed up again, David Wright signed for like 20 out of 22 people, leaving me and another guy the only 2 people who didn't get him. Also Pedro showed up and said he would sign on the way out but after being shot down by Wright and it being almost 6pm I decided to skip out on Pedro.

Oh I hate it when that happens. Especially on a big name player.

Well, you did quite well IMO. 11 autos is a nice haul for one day.

You know, I really just didn't plan my day correctly! How often does locker clean out day coincide with a day off from work. I teach and I'm off tues / wed and I scheduled the cable company to come today instead of Wednesday. I was reading the paper this morning and I was trying to determine if today was going to be the day the players "cleaned up". I couldn't really leave the house because of the cable appointment, but after reading your post, I should have scheduled the cable company to come on Wednesday ... oh well .. live and learn. You said there were about 20 people trying to get autographs?

What time did you get there?

Yeah it was about 20-22 people later on in the day, I got to Shea around 11 after my class ended and there was about 10-12 people. I got the sense that a lot of them knew each other from hanging out at Shea constantly before games or at team hotels. As the day went on more and more people came and the stranger they became also.

This one girl came over to me when she saw I had a box of a dozen balls and started asking me all kinds of questions like if I'm a collector, where do I keep my stuff, how come I've never came before, etc. I told her the truth that I'm a collector, I have some shelves with Mets stuff in my room and the last time I went for Autographs outside of going to shows or TTM was like 10 years ago; she then asked to see my John Maine ball and goes that's a bad signature, I was like it's fine for my collection and then she walked away.

Overall it wasn't a bad day, I did finally get to meet John Maine and not have to pay like $70 for his autograph through Steiner, same thing with Endy Chavez getting him on a photo from the NLCS saves a good chunk of change.

I also got interviewed by a NY Times reporter and it got into today's paper and the online edition as well

Great day at the ballpark. I would say that a dozen autos of your fav. team is probably the best feeling.

When you said about the weirdos that you met trying to get an auto. you are absolutely correct!!!

I have been approached by a few guys at spring training here in Phoenix, who seem to have countless items for a guy to autograph. One I can remember was a skinny guy with about 10 bats in a bat bag. Just as Corey Hart would sign one, he would bring out another, and another!!! After about 4, Corey Hart looked my way and my baseball and kinda shoved past this guy who was trying to keep himself inbetween him and the clubhouse. Corey, being about 6'6in. reached over him, and said "Ive seen you here yesterday, you need an auto? I said sure and thanks.

He was nice to me and my 3 month old twins in a stroller and said "thanks for bringing the kids out, never to young to get them being a fan"

The guy said to me after hart left "if you wouldnt have been here, I could've gotten all my bats signed!!!" I couldnt believe that he said that to me. I said well, Im happy getting the autograph for my PERSONAL collection and its people like you that make it harder for us to get an autograph.

Sorry for being long winded, but just wanted to get that out there. Hope everyone has good luck with the players they see. Its not always the player being a jerk, but after times like that, I can understand why certain players avoid the crowds like the plague. Why should they pad the pocket of a greedy person making a buck off their name??? Wouldnt that tick you off?

I usually ask the player TTM to personalize the card, photo, etc. to my son. That way, they know Im not going to sell it and it means just that much more to me.
