Sapp agrees to seven-year deal with Raiders
NFL.com wire reports
TAMPA, Fla. (March 20, 2004) -- Seven-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Warren Sapp agreed to terms on a seven-year, $36.6 million contract with the Oakland Raiders, ending his nine-year relationship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"The bad news is I won't be back with the Bucs," Sapp said by telephone from Miami. "The good news is I'm a Raider."
The surprise move came only a day after Sapp's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said the one-time NFL defensive player of the year was close to signing a four-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Sapp's contract is expected to be signed within the next few days, pending the passing of a physical, the Raiders said.
"Warren Sapp is another popular player to join the organization just like a Jim Plunkett, a Rod Woodson, and a Jerry Rice," Raiders spokesman Artie Gigantino said.
Earlier this month, the 31-year-old tackle said he was optimistic about the prospect of re-signing with the Bucs. But that changed when his old team failed to make him an offer during the first week of the free-agency period.
"We feel he's got a lot of football left in him and will make a positive contribution to the Oakland Raiders' defense the next couple of years," Gigantino said.
Sapp joined the Bucs as first-round draft pick out of Miami in 1995 and -- along with linebacker Derrick Brooks and safety John Lynch -- helped transform the Bucs from a laughingstock into Super Bowl champions.
Lynch was released last week after 11 seasons with Tampa Bay, a move that cleared about $4 million under the NFL salary cap.
Sapp leaves the only pro team he has played for two sacks shy of the franchise record of 78˝ held by Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon.

well, the Raiders and Al Davis stick to their theme of picking up unwanted veterans
for the last 2-3 years, Sapp wasn't even the best defensive player on the team (Derrick Brooks, John Lynch)....
we'll see how he does in Oakland
on an ironic note: Jerry Rice, in 1997, the first game of the season, was pulled down by Sapp via the facemask after making a catch. Rice tore his patella (knee cap) and missed 14 games before making an amazing comeback within that season; Rice caught a TD pass in his first game back after missing 14 games
Sapp has never apologized for that dirty play. Everyone watching the play knows it was a dirty play.
And now, as Rice enters his final season, he and Sapp are "re-united"
lolol
ooooh, what a small world, eh?
Had Rice not missed that 1997 season, he would've added much more to his multitudinous records he owns

I kind of like the approach the Raiders are taking this offseason. They're trying to improve a defense that was very suspect last season and still bad against the run. With the additions of Sapp and Ted Washington, that should help tremendously in plugging up the lanes. Dwayne Rudd was also a good pickup in my opinion but I'm still not sure as to wether or not he'll be able to replace the kind of player Eric Barton was. Now all they have to do is pickup Eli Manning or Mike Williams with that second pick and let the good times roll.

With all due respect, John
Raiders have no QB (Gannon is now a year older, slower, can he recover from his injuries, from the Super Bowl blow-out? etc)
Will Jerry Porter be healthy to go with Jerry RIce? Tim Brown is basically useless; he can't even get off the line at the start of the snap
Will Charles Woodson be back to anchor the CBs?
Will Tyrone Wheatley hold up?
What about the offensive line?
The addition of Sapp and Ted Washington helps a whole bunch... but they're not going far unless they have solid play from the QB

Spoken like a true hating 49er fan Pod...LOL
I'm not worried about the quarterback situation that much. Gannon should be solid. Maybe not like he was a couple of years ago but still good enough to get the job done. Woodson will more than likely be back. Porter has had time to get over that pelvic injury and should be back to his old self. I think you're drastically underestimating Time Browns ability. He may be a step slower but is still one of the best route runners in the game. His stats sucked last year because look who he had throwing the ball to him for the majority of the season...Rick Mirer and Tee Martin. Plus the Raiders did nothing but run all last season because of the ineffectiveness of Mirer and Martin. Wheatley is ok but my only concern is how Justin Fargas will be after his injury. The big factor is going to be who the Raiders get with the second pick in the draft this year. If they get Eli Manning, that could fix some of the problem and if they get Mike Williams or Larry Fitzgerald, that could help their aging reciever core. I think the Raiders are going to be better than people are giving them credit for. They may not go 14-2 but they will make the playoffs.
