Has anyone else noticed....
That the two-party system is killing America?
All it is, is a big competition between Democrats and Republicans. Each party seems to be battling back and forth to out-do each other without worrying about what's best for our country.
I've noticed it.
And even though I used to be a straight Republican, I've figured out that neither party is looking out for us. Just a victory for their respective party.
I am not an Sen. Obama supporter at all. I actually prefer Sen. McCain. But one thing I know is that I AM a 3rd party supporter.
Will I be voting for Sen. McCain, I dont know, but I do know this, we (as Americans) need a 3rd party.
Rivalries are great (OU vs UT, UM vs OSU, ND vs USC, etc), but a rivalry, as important as our government, is not good for our country.
There is WAY too much competition between our two parties (Reps and Dems), to the point where they worry too much about themselves and not the American people. Which is bad, obviously.
I dont want a Democrat in office. I dont want a Republican in office. I WANT A PATRIOT IN OFFICE. I want someone in office who loves America. I want someone who knows what we fought for in the Revolutionary War to gain our independence, to make us the country that we are.
We defeated a mighty country to gain our independence. We had a civil war, and we fought through it. We've been through TWO world wars and prospered. We've had terroist attacks on our land and showed how patriotic we CAN be. We are THE United States of America
So how can we let political parties devide us? Are we that weak?
No we arent.
But we arent united. We are divided by party. Which both have great things to offer, but until they learn to work together nothing good will come of it.
So can we slap these parties in the face and tell them what the deal is? No.
More drastic measures must be taken. A third party? Letters? Maybe.
The USA is competitive nation, so I'm not sure what all needs to be done to make these parties see what is REALLY going on. Competition is great, but not withitn our nation (unless its sports or such, as long as it doesn't hurt us as a united nation).
Hopefully one day SOON people will see whats going on, and fix it.
Until then, GOD BLESS THE USA.

We have third parties, but they don't garner major public support.
Many people would support another candidate, but then they say "there is no chance of a win," so many just go back and vote for one of the two major party candidates.
If we keep having the mentality there is no chance for third parties to win, and do not vote for the third party person because of that, then obviously the status quo will not change! I'm voting third party myself this year - so what if there is no chance of a win this time? If more people voted based on where their closest match lies and didn't just cave into the system, I think it would be for the better.

I like the idea of multiple parties (more than 3). I think it was Portugal that someone mentioned a while back and how they have 5-8 different parties. And if you think about it, we kind of already do. Within the Republicans and the Democrats, there are different factions. So the primary is basically the two major parties selecting from the smaller parties that fall under them to present one candidate for the final vote...kind of a playoff on the way to the Super Bowl. Why not break that out and let each factions candidate go to the big show?

The problem is that Dems and Reps try to put several ideologies under their respective umbrellas, leaving other parties little room to pull voters away from the established Dems and Reps.
I would not necessarily want a 'patriot' in office. I want someone who understands how to navigate economic, social, and international issues, and makes decisions that make our country better. Whether that means the person is patriotic, in the traditionally viewed sense, is secondary. It is not a matter of employing historically developed mindsets to the here and now, although the person should understand our history.
Dismantling the two party system would mean a reworking of our entire political society. It would also mean a transformation of the way the people interact with politics and government. However, we have to consider the consequences. How will this change affect the process of politics and as a result, the dynamic of our society? Its one thing to see it would be a better setup, but its another to see how it works when/if implemented (we are not Portugal).

I have a feeling in 4 years a third party candidate could be a viable option.
The problem is all 3rd party candidates that can win only think of going for president. If the started small and ran for local or state offices and got the party going then they could change the country but untill they put their ego in check and accept something less then president it won't happen.
The Rep. and Dem. set the rules for the election and untill you get some others in congress and senate to change the rules that will never happen..
The thing that gets me is the standards for a third party candidate to get on the ballot for president are different in all 50 states, it's a NATIONAL office the standards to run should be uniform from state to state.

I agree that the two party system is very ineffective. I feel like rather than being Republicans, they are anti-Democrats and vice versa.
But in the middle of your post, you say that you're voting for McCain. Don't do that! If you want a more diversified party horizon, you need to make your vote count. Too many people feel the way you (and I) do, but just vote for one of the two main candidates because the media says anything else is a waste.
And I put my money where my mouth is this past Saturday as I voted for Bob Barr.
A patriot in office? Perhaps Tom Brady should run..
We may be divided in our politics, but if we weren't we wouldn't see the sort of balance that comes in a united nation. As much bickering as the parties do, they offset each other to keep the policies of this nation fairly moderate and steady. The only thing left to do is realize that the perverbial scale is of the third dimension and needs more than two parties to balance perfectly.
Vote for who you truly want. You can't waste a vote if you do that.

FOR GODS SAKE DON'T VOTE STRAIGHT PARTY TICKET.
People who just go in and check Dem or Rep drive me insane. I'm sorry but just because they are "your" party doesn't make them the best person for the job. I already know who I am voting for and there are a few republicans and a few democrats and one who belongs to neither party..
