House Explosion!!
I will let this go for a couple of days before I tell you what exactly was the cause because it will spoil everything. It just goes to show you that all Chiefs and Training Captains aren't that smart.

OK it seems like I have pissed someone off because of this video and I apologize. Someone needs to close this down if it is offending someone or everyone.
Let me explain. This building was going to be demolished by the owners but they offered to the fire department for training. One of the chiefs received a 55 gallon drum of some kind of material. I don't think it was ever determined. He decided he would use it in the building for an accelerant so they poured in the first floor. But it was poured a good hour before it was lit off. The Training Officer lit it off and there was an explosion because of the vapors being heavier than air so they stayed right there on the first floor. So much for the training burn. No firefighters got killed. And I believe only a few had some bumps and bruises. The only real injury was the from the family taping the incident. Their son fell off the railing and broke a arm.
I apologize again and again if I offended anyone. I would be the last person to show a firefighter get hurt or killed unless it was for training purposes at my department. And it wouldn't go any farther than that. I say I am the last person because I am the Training Captain for my department.
Can someone close this thread please? Thanks

That's crazy. Glad no one was hurt. From the tape it's surprising that there weren't any serious injuries or worse. I guess in the end it turned out to be a very good lesson learned for future training exercises.
I'm not sure what offended anyone unless they thought people had died.

I opened it because as you said no-one got killed, 5 injured-hospitalized(only 1 stayed at the hospital I believe) but no fatalities.
It was an accident that can/did happen to the best of them, I look forward to your insight on this subject and others. More so my brother & his wife(as I showed them) who both volunteer at the local station.

If anything it is just a reminder that anything can happen at any given day for these guys. Glad no one was hurt. Stay safe OP

This was kind of meant to be a PSA in addition to the shock value of what can happen if you aren't paying attention. How many here or people we know have fireplaces or wood stoves and are fixing to use them or already are? I am presuming quite a few. How many have tried or still use some kind of "addition" to get that fire going? I am talking gas, diesel or kerosene. Toss a cup or two in, going and grab a match or lighter then poof that flame doesn't go up it comes out the same opening used for the lighter. Your face gets it losing a few hairs. Your clothes or the carpet catches on fire. It is not that we want to visit but not in that way. Remember the vapors from those "additions" is what is burning not the liquid. And the vapors are heavier that air so they stay low. They are just waiting to bite you. That is what happened in this house.
Please have a safe winter while starting your fireplace or wood stove. Start small then let it roar and make sure those chimneys are clean.

When I was in my mid teens (1980ish) I worked with a guy splitting logs on his little plot of land. I got there early one day and decided to fire up the 55 gallon drum we used for heat. Put in a bunch of wood and dumped some gasoline on top of it. By the time I lit the match and tossed it into the drum the fumes had spread out and ignited into a "flash" about 30 feet in diameter. Fortunately I wasn't hurt and learned the lesson you're trying to teach..........
ANY accelarant, besides something like balled up newspaper, small kindling, or a "starter log", is incredibly dangerous !!
It's a seperate issue, but your video is also why I get the heebie jeebies when I see police put people in handcuffs and say "it's for YOUR security and mine".
