    10 Qualities for Proper Debating

The Design Matrix: The 10 Signs of Intellectual Honesty

This article lays out 10 qualities that provide integrity in debating. The farther I read into this, the more I felt the need to post it here...because every single one of these "rules" are broken repeatedly around here.

No need to point out who does what...don't point out the speck in another's eye while there is a beam in your own.

Blasphemer! There is no room for such nonsense as rationality, mutual respect and honesty on this forum.

    ...

"Address the argument instead of attacking the person making the argument." Should be #1.

"Show a commitment to critical thinking." #2 - although for some this is a huge challenge.

"Be willing to publicly acknowledge when you are wrong." Hah, good luck with that one on here.

Its easy for people to read it, and another to actually see a difference in arguments.

Very true...I definitely agree about bumping that one to #1, especially in this forum. But, it's just a reflection of the political system in general...instead of answering charges and debating the issues, more finger pointing.

good list & i agree attacking the argument should be #1

also, as i read this list, i do believe the most difficult for people to follow would be the willingness to admit when you're wrong. For most, including myself, this is probably the last thing you want to do and people will look for all alternatives before admitting being wrong. I think that's just a natural human characteristic...who really wants to admit being wrong? I know that when I was in school, I would challenge every test answer I got wrong.

Those 10 rules are very watered down pieces of the socratic method. There is no rule thats any more important than the other although some might apply to the situation more than the next. Its very obvious that ad hominem is the worst fallacy commited in these forums. so I was thinking maybe a well organized thread about the rules of proper debate might make a great sticky for the political forum here. A little education can go a long way and maybe make that forum good for scf members again.
