Help!!
I just started collecting cards from a long hiatus from when I was younger. When I was younger I just purchased single packs from local hobby marts, now that I am older and can afford a lot more, what is the best way to build a valuable collection I can be proud of. I have been trying single packs, blaster boxes (wal-mart/target). I was considering going to the only card shop around left and buying hobby boxes. I am interested in collecting only football/baseball and would like to base of collection around auto/jersey cards (obviously). Any information on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

Also, what card brands hold the most value? So I know that cards are worth buying. Topps, Dunruss, UD and what types of brands Topps RP, Upperdeck icons/legends, etc...? Again, Thx!

upper deck is highest end, but you can get burned pretty bad by their high end too. plus their customer service is atrocious

These are only/mainly good for sets like Heritage, A&Ginter, although T.Chrome is ok if you're having Rip Withdrawals, and want to review the cards on the cheap..lol
But overall...
BUY SINGLES of players you like, Rc auto's, etc..you can never(99.9%) go with that!

If you are looking for a personal collection, I would stick to buying singels off of ebay. And even picking up some trade bait to get what you want. Hobby boxes are such a long shot.

My advice to you:
Stop blowing money on retail for target and wal-mart. If you're looking to only spend $20-40 go to a local hobby shop or eBay and get yourself a 2-3 packs of 2008 SPx football or baseball. One hit per pack, if you buy more than 1 pack you have a good shot at an high-end auto.
