interesting poll data... your thoughts?
Forgive me, the data is nearly 20 years old, but I think the answers would still be pretty similar....
A 1990 Gallup poll of over 1,200 adult Americans shows the following levels of belief in the paranormal:
• Personally had a psychic experience 67%
• Noah’s Flood 65%
• Astrology 52%
• ESP 46%
• Communication with the dead 42%
• Dinosaurs and humans lived simultaneously 41%
• Ghosts 35%
• Atlantis 33%
• Aliens have landed on Earth 22%
• Witches 19%
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Personally I find the numbers to be rather disturbing and quite indicative of the intellectual nosedive this country has taken over the past few decades.

Doesn't surprise me - I'd bet most of us have had a paranormal experience - whether you actually believe it or not is another story, but I would bet that you have seen something. I have...

Interestingly enough, polls range from 25% to 75% of Americans believing in the paranormal so you aren't alone.
I, for one, remain skeptical, and an "unbeliever" I guess you could say, since there is not one single shred of legitimate scientific evidence that alludes to the existence of the paranormal, which includes psychic ability, but rather it should be coined as mysticism in general.
The difference between science and mysticism is that in science, whether a mistake or fraud is made honestly or dishonestly, in time it will be flushed out of the system due to a lack of external verification. Unfortunately, in the case of the mystic, external validation of its claims, by definition, is impossible.
This is not to discredit the benefits of ascribing to one or many forms of mysticism. From what I've read over the years, there is a great deal of psychological evidence that belief in that which is considered mystical (this includes religion in general) reduces anxiety in uncertain environments. Medical evidence also shows that prayer, meditation, and worship may lead to a greater physical and mental health. So I don't blame people for seeking reassuring certainties from fortune-tellers and palm-readers, astrologers, and psychics. But it doesn't make the phenomena any more real.
