Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer a religious song?
Rudolph controversy gets national coverage
It began when a parent was upset her child was told to sing "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer." The parent is concerned the words "Christmas" and "Santa" hold religious meaning.
I understand the term "Christmas" is derived from the word Christ, but now it has become a secularized term and is not used in the religious context very often. Should we have to change the name of the months because they're based on mythological gods? It's the same thing.
But what I don't understand about this: Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer is one of the most secular Christmas carols and Santa Claus is one of the most secular Christmas symbols. I know some people just look for things to complain about and try to cause problems, but this is just idiotic and shouldn't even be addressed.

wow...just wow. You are right, there are people who will complain about everything. The fact that this is newsworthy (makes national news) only give people more reason to make a big deal out of things.
You are also right about the words to the song. But, we have grown to live in a society where if one kid out of a thousand is bothered by something, then we don't do it so it pays to complain.

The only thing i agree with, is Santa being connected to religion. I had a guy i worked with that was religious and started talking to me about Santa. I asked him to stop because i look at Santa as part of the religion. The way I look at it is santa is the way to get kids started into the religion, by believing in something that makes you try to do good so you get some thing in return. With Santa the kids are told behave and get presents if your bad you get coal, but you still get some thing. With religion if your good you go to Heaven and if your bad you go to Hell but you still die. not saying this is how is was ment just how I look at it.

crazy. I agree rudolph and santa are probably the most non religious figures of christmas. I'm not religious at all and I celebrate christmas. I don't even see it as a religious holiday for myself. If the mother is a different religion and doesn't want her child converted that is fine, but can't people of different beliefs learn about other religions or cultural icons such as Santa and Rudolf? I bet it's mostly a power play like "you can't make my child do this if I don't want them to."
If they pulled this song, what in the heck will they be singing. lol

Santa Claus isn't a religious symbol. If he is simply because he rewards those who do good, then capitalism is also a religious symbol.

Santa Claus is only a religious symbol in that people start calling him "God" when they grow up. The same people who think that Jesus was actually born on December 25, year zero, and don't realize that Christmas was originally a Pagan holiday called Saturnalia.
You're right, OnePimp, Rudolph is a purely secular song. But it's also incredibly stupid and annoying. Every time I hear it I cringe, especially if it's a children's choir singing it. People just keep dragging out the same old Christmas songs year after year, and they suck worse every year because they're that much older and overblown. I say we need to introduce at least one new Christmas song into mainstream culture every year, and once they turn 10 years old, just stop singing them. My already-disturbed mind can't take this much longer.

What if we made them metal songs? Give them a little pep, I think it could work.

One parent's crazy rantings constitute a "war on christmas"?
This is nothing more than more fake moral outrage from the likes of fox news & Rush Limbaugh. It makes "national news" because they seek out tabloid crap like this to get conservative viewers all riled up. One persons idiotic rantings make it so that O'reilly and rush get to keep a paycheck. Please feel free to message me here about my electronic bay & COMC listings
