Penny sleeves.long term storage of commons?
Aloha,
I read that placing cards in penny sleeves is not good for long term storage as after awhile the sleeves get stuck to the front of the cards. What is the best way to store commons for long term storage? instead of putting them individually in penny sleeves, should i just put my commons in a 5,000 count monster box without any sleeves? please let me know as I just started putting my collection in these sleeves and if it is bad for the cards, id rather know now before i get too into this project. any advice/help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Very Respectfully,
Elbert

I prefer the penny sleeves over no protection at all for commons, as many commons, especially newer ones with glossy finishes will stick together. Im sure this has something to do with humidity/heat/expansion contraction and the like. It is my personal belief that the penny sleeves help prevent the sticking. As far as penny sleeves sticking to cards, I've never had that problem. Are you using a lower quality sleeve? I've tried to reuse old penny sleeves from the early 90's but the new ultra pro's are much better by comparison. The older sleeves were a little tacky.

Aloha bra:
Its my understanding that older sleeves did/were ruining cards as they weren't made to todays standards. The Ultra Pro sleeves are...
100% Acid Free, have No PVC, and are Archival Safe
I can't say the same for generic sleeves though.
Hope that helps bro!

it was vice versa.
having them stored in boxes could make the cards stick together. there is nothing to prevent them from sticking together in the long run

Hey Elbert!
That whole "penny sleeve is bad for the cards" thing is nonsense to me. If anything they'll protect your cards. I don't think it's necessary to store your commons in penny sleeve's though. It's not worth the time and money, your better off putting them in a couple of 5k count boxes. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

It depends on how many you have. If you are like most of us and have thousands of commons, it becomes impractical to use penny sleeves, even if you are placing as many as six cards into each sleeve. In this case, large boxes are the best bet. And if a card has bad gloss, it will stick to either sleeves or other cards regardless.

I'd think it would cost more to store 5000 commons in penny sleeves than the cards would be worth.

daclyde,
i would agree, but these would be topps from the 60's and 70's, so for me thats a little better than if they were 1990's or 2000's.
